OK, I just ordered a portable Epass. I put in my car license plate figuring I could change it to DW's van and/or a rental car. I must be blind, but I don't see where on the epass site to change the plate. In which case, I just wasted $20. :P

Or, do I get that option once I receive the transponder and register it?

TIA

with Sunpass the option is on the website and app after you set up your account .. you need the transponder # to do that

On the main page after you log in, there's a section titled "E-Pass Transponders" where you add and edit transponders and related vehicles. If you don't see that yet, you probably need to wait until you get the transponder.

Are you sure you ordered an E-Pass? Portable E-Passes are $10, not $20. Portable Sunpasses are $20.

There is an area that lists transponders and there's one listed. There's no vehicle associated with it, but it does have the license plate I put in. I don't see a way to edit it however.

$10 for the transponder and $10 to "fund" it.

This is how it looks on my account:

Do you not have the Edit button on the right of the detail line? Is your status "Active" or something else?

Nope. No vehicle listed either. I'm now going to assume once I get my transponder and register it, I'll be able to edit. Just looking for the peace of mind.

Yeah, you don't have an actual transponder on your account yet. You'll probably have to use the "Add Transponder" button when you receive it.

I've had mine since way back when they used to have batteries, so my account was set up on an earlier version of the website.

I'm bumping this so I can learn some more and others might benefit. So I got my transponder in the mail yesterday. I go online and it shows up, and I can edit the car and license tag.

I want to use this on a rental car Friday and want to make sure I have the procedure down so I don't get double billed (my transponder and the one in the rental car) or hit with a "missed toll fee". Here's what I plan on doing, please let me know if this would be correct:

Get to my rental car (in this case Hertz if that makes a difference).
Find Hertz's transponder and take it off the window (what if they just have a sticker?). Or do rental cars use plate recognition?
Put Hertz's transponder in the bag my transponder came in (it's an anti-static bag, doesn't look special to me) and hang my transponder on the window.
Log in to Epass from my phone and edit the transponder information to reflect the rental car
Drive as normal (It will take me about an hour to get to the toll road I'm using).
When I return the car, simply swap the transponders again after the last toll. (This is the part I'm afraid I'm going to forget).

Am I missing anything?

Thanks

most rentals use a plate recognition system (explained on the sunpass rental car page) so no transponder to remove

the only exception to this I've seen recently is some Budget cars where the transponder is in a metal box which you can close to turn it off ....

From the Hertz website PlatePass page:

How is PlatePass activated?

For Transponder regions: To use PlatePass, slide open the gray transponder box behind the rearview mirror (if available), so that the toll agency can read the transponder. If your vehicle is not equipped with a transponder, simply drive through the toll lane.

What if I do not want to purchase PlatePass?

To avoid using PlatePass: (1) If your rental vehicle includes a transponder, make sure it remains secured within the shield box, with the shield box closed and (2) pay all tolls with cash, with your personal toll transponder (where per-mitted) compatible with the toll road, or directly to the toll authority (where permitted).
If there's no PlatePass transponder, the license plate will only be used if you don't use your own transponder or pay cash.

Well that simplifies things.

So I just need to look and if there is a box behind the mirror, make sure it's closed and stick my transponder on the window (and update the epass website w/vehicle info).

thank you!
