Endoscopy AND Colonoscopy SAME TIME

I had both done. I was 'out' also. The worse part is drinking the crud the night before. Really, there are far worse things in life.

OK. Now I have to ask and someone please tell me.... what is the prep, and why is it so bad? Is it bad becasue it's gross... or because it makes you ill?
You do it at home... that sounds tame enough. But... please tell. :scared1:

I have never had it done, but my friends 10 year old DD had it done last year. She was nervous but the adults were freaking (not in front of her) She was fine she said nothing hurt or was sore she woke up and said hum, no big deal! Dont worry have a positive attitude and it will work out fine. Hey are those leopard app's your's? I have been looking for a leopard mare.

YES! Leopard appy... Dreamer is his name and he is spoiled ROTTEN! ;) We also have a mustang. She's an absolute Angel!

The prep is for the colonoscopy portion. I used the Osmoprep tablets which I am told is the "best" prep (by my friend who has had 9 colonoscopies).

Anyway, you cannot eat the whole day before the test. Just fluids. At 5:00pm. or so that evening, you will either take pills or take a liquid (a lot of liquid if you use the GoLytley or HalfLytley stuff). You then will have the "runs" most of the evening. Then you get up and take some more and have some more runs. By the time you go in for the colonoscopy, you are pretty wiped out.

Thanks everyone. I dont like the fact, but it is a fact. I've gotta do this. I hope whatever they find is gentle to my kids' future with their mommy.
Prayers greatly appreciated.

I'm going to put you on my prayer list, teacups. :goodvibes

Honestly, when I did the prep, it wasn't that bad. In the afternoon prior to my two procedures, I had a small bottle of something tart that I mixed with a sweet drink and it went down easily. I'm a real gagger about things like that, but that wasn't a problem at all. I didn't have to fast the day I drank that either. The next morning before my procedure, I had to mix half a small bottle of a sweet concoction with eight ounces of something unsweetened and drink it. An hour later I had to do the same with the remainder of that bottle. You will run to the bathroom A LOT, and I do mean run!

Please try not to worry about this. Make sure you advise your doctor that you are very anxious and you want some GOOD drugs. My doctor was so good to give me that good "wimp juice" and I am so thankful. Really, I had nothing to worry about but I didn't know that until after it was all over.

Again, know that prayers are with you.

I have had them one at a time and the endo was not difficult at all the colonoscopy, the prep is not an easy one.. But get it done, put it behind you and relax for how many years they say you have before your next one.

I like that they do both at the same time, you get it all out of the way at one time. Just tell them you are nervous and afraid that you may wake up during it as you have heard stories and they will make sure you have enough versed so that you are not consciously awake.. Works for me, I do not want to feel it or know about it during it.. I will keep you in my prayers for an easy time.

You betcha. Keep us posted, we care.

I haven't done either of those, but my mom has done the endoscopy. Twice. And over here, they do it without drugs.

My mom is the biggest wimp in the world, and she survived without drugs, so you should be fine!! Really

I thought it was just bad because it's gross, your "butt" gets sore and I was STARVING from just drinking clear fluids and sucking on mints. I didn't sleep well the night before the procedures, either, my belly was just grumbling and growling. My little cat Mika slept on my stomach, which she almost never does. To her, I was probably purring! :rotfl:

I had both done in March of this year. The worse part for me was the darn solution you have to drink the day before. It tasted terrrible:sick: Let me give you a couple hints on taking it.

1. Make yourself a big bowl of jello - just make sure it is the kind you can take - no red, orange, etc.

2. drink both hot and cold tea, don't just drink cold things because you get really cold

3. make sure you chill the solution

I would take a big spoonful of jello, chug half the glass of solution, follow that with a sip of tea and then finish the other half of the solution, followed by another spoonful of jello. That was the only way I could get that stuff down. I did the lemon-lime flavor, but my Mom has always liked the orange flavor for the solution. We were given three flavors to add to our solutions (my Mom had it done a week later): cherry, orange and lemon-lime.

As for the procedures, they gave me three shots of something, after the first shot, I was is in la la land. I do remember waking up once and noticing there was a TV on and thinking to myself, "what in the world are they watching on TV":lmao: I guess I said it out loud, because they told me "that's the inside of your colon". That is all I remember for the whole thing:rotfl2:

They found one 3 mm polyp that they removed, but nothing else. The procedure was really nothing.

After reading through some of the replies, it looks like there are several different types of preps. I can't remember what mine was called, but I had to take four pills, wait an hour and then drink a gallon of a solution in 2 hours. That is how they do it for our procedure (my Mom did the same). I had to stop eating at 12 noon, the day before my procedure. I then started the pills/solution about 2 pm that day.

Better yet, I'm telling ya--ASK FOR THE PILLS--they are called OsmoPrep. There are 32 of them. You take the first 20 over an hour timespan washing each set down with Gatorade. The last 12 are taking the morning of your procedure--again with Gatorade. There was nothing bad with this prep as is the case with the liquid prep.

Also, I've had many friends tell me that the liquid preps give you some cramping. The three of us at work have just done the OsmoPrep tablets and none of us had any cramping.

:grouphug:

I had both procedures done at once last year and honestly the worst part really is the prep and running to the bathroom. It's a good idea to have some wipies w/lotion on hand. I did the lemon lime prep drink mixed with a clear flavored drink.

My dr and tech were just the sweetest and made me feel completely at ease. Don't worry, they do this procedure and see patients backsides all day, so there is really nothing to be embarrassed about dear. The IV made me very very drowsy and I never felt a thing, but I actually watched parts of procedure on the monitor.

Think positive and keep the faith, remind yourself this as one of the best gifts you can give yourself and family. In my case they removed a couple of polyps that thankfully tested negative. Our SonIL works GI and he says many polyps usually take years to turn to cancer and so very many people could be saved if these procedures were mandatory and polyps detected early on.

:tinker: Sending you pixie dust, prayers and ((hugs)) your way!

My brother died of cancer when he was 46 and left three small children behind. I'm 41. I wish they did a lot more testing. Thanks for all the kind words. I just decided that I'm doing this, so I may as well quit whimpering about it. Plus, I have all of you watching my back...( back-side that is! ;) I'm laughing my silly self all the way to the slippery end of that scope! (not really. Im trying to be positive.)

I had both at the same time in March. It was a piece of cake. They gave me the sedation. I woke up. I didn't remember a thing. I had no problems at all. No sore throat. Based on my perspective, it seemed like the endoscopy never happened. I knew I'd had the colonoscopy due to the residual gas, but I felt fine.

OP, don't fret. You'll be fine!

I'm starting my goose-juice in 45 minutes... then I suppose the fun begins! Testing tomorrow at 1pm.

Cant turn back now!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I just noticed I'm STARVING!) That dancing banana looks gooood!

teacups, Good luck - you're doing the right thing! :thumbsup2
