I've posted on here before about my not so great seasonal job. Well once your time is up, the employer has to let you know correct? They can't just let you go without letting you know at all? The 5 of us hired weren't put for any hours this past week, and same for this coming week. But we haven't been told ANYTHING. :confused3

I'd ask your boss about it. I'd just ask if there was a reason you aren't getting any hours and see what your boss says.

I've never heard of someone being let go but not getting told.

Good Luck!

We've tried, and gotten nothing. None of know whats going on, even when we've flat out asked. this is coming from managers that aren't the best either.

What kind of a seasonal job is it?
In a "right to work" state an employer can let you go without warning....but to just "string you along" is ridiculous!

Its retail. I know they can let us go at any time, but they have to tell us we have been let go right?

what exactly are they telling you when you ask why you aren't on the schedule?

That it isn't the final one, and keep checking back, Yet it never changes.

I worked a seasonal retail job way back when and it was over at the end of the holiday season. I don't remember getting an official notification, but we only had a schedule until New Year's and then that was it. I did get called one week later to return, but otherwise, the job was over.

It does seem strange that if you ask, they don't tell you all that the seasonal positions have ended. :confused3

When I worked for Bath and Body Works, we hired seasonal people obviously. They were told upfront when the last day would be and then we would tell them when it actually occured. But some people just did not remember when we first hired them that were just seasonal. We had a set date to get seasonals out of the system. It was just a friendly reminder the last day was approaching. So to answer your question, you need to press them as to a last day. The managers must know when they have to let you go. I was never aware of a law or anything that required you to be notified but it was a mute point where I worked. Good luck!

This is pretty standard of retail in my experience. You know you are there seasonally for the holiday season. Well, the holiday season is over. I would just talk to a manager and say to them that you are assuming this means your time there is over, but you just want to be sure because you don't plan on checking the schedule anymore.

I agree with the others, when hired seasonally you are done at the end of the season. Often it is something they will tell you upon hire, this job is for the "Christmas Season" and they assume you are smart enough to figure out that the Christmas Season generally ends at New Years.

You hate the job anyway so you should be happy.

What they "have" to do versus what they "should" do is quite often two different things (depending on your state laws).

Generally, they do not (legally) have to give you any formal notice about the end of your position.

That does not mean they aren't being jerks for the way they are treating you right now. Of course, being a jerk is never illegal, so chalk it up to experience and move on. You don't want to work for someone who treats their employees like that.

I see things differently, I have never seen a schedule where they keep people name on there if they didn't work there.

Look into your state's unemployment laws as well. It may well be that the managers are trying to goad you and the other seasonals into "quitting" so they don't have to pay you unemployment.

Your state should have a labor web site that would give you answers.

I work seasonally in a call center for a catalog retailer. Seasonally depends on their volume of business rather than a set date. I wasn't laid off until this past week this year while in the past it was the week of Christmas. Maybe they just don't know yet? Any way without a schedule you aren't working so I would see that as the end.

Sounds pretty typical for retail around here, I know quite a few people that have just not been put on the schedule for a few weeks and had to just take that as there way of being let go or not needed for the time being. Maybe it has something to do with unemployment benefits? I'm not sure on this of course but if you are never given an official termination would be you be eligible for unemployment?

I know at least from my experience, they keep the seasonal hires technically on the schedule so if there is an open permanent position it's easier from the HR standpoint. The seasonal sales staff is actually scheduled with regular shifts for us through next week. The extra hands are needed to take inventory.

That being said, the 2 seasonal trimmers that I had working with me finished before Thanksgiving. I hopped onto my schedule last Monday to make sure my New Year's holiday actually went in. They're both still listed on the schedule, it's just a matter of an HR hold-up with the paperwork.

Seasonal workers don't get unemployment.

If you have not worked during the week - you are allowed to file for unemployment, so I don't think they are trying to avoid unemployment.
