DH and I are considering our options as he is about to be made redundant in the next 3-4 months and have discussed the possibility of emigrating to USA, wondered if anyone had any help or ever looked into it or even done it!!!!! We haven't decided anything yet but are exploring several options and thought that the opportunties for the children would be good, after 25 year in his job payout should be quite large and with the sale of the house wondered if we could afford 2 villa type properties one for ourselves and one as a holiday rental proprty which we would manage ourselves. If we could not do this would consider employment as although I have no formal qualifications have worked as a cook/chef for some years now but things are really still in the very early stages. Any help would be appreciated.

unfortunatly it's very hard to get a visa to work in the USA, you either have to have a job first, and get the company to sponsor your application, or I think there is a way involving starting a business and hiring american staff, which might possibly work with your villa idea, or else it helps if you are very rich :)

i don't know the details, but I know when we emigrated in 1979 it took my dad nearly 2 years to get his visa sorted out, and he had a company sponsoring him.

here's the us immigration websiteUS INS

Bev's right, it's very difficult at the moment. The INS (Immigration & Naturalization Service) is under the gun and they're acting like a bunch of idiots. My parents currently have some German friends living with them. They came over on a six month visa, but when they came through the INS, their passport was stamped for three months. They had no recourse. Those INS officials are little gods. Their friends have had to hire a lawyer to try and get them work permits.

Remember that coming over here to live is an entirely different ball of wax than coming over here on holiday. You won't have family, friends, or any kind of support network. That being said, there are tons of British ex-pats in Florida.

I hope I haven't sounded too negative. I must admit, life in these United States is pretty darn good, although, I wouldn't mind have a little place in England as well. :p

The hard part here is not to get the visa to get into the country, is to get the work permit, these things take a long time and now it takes longer than before. Fortunately I only had to wait for a year for that but I wasn't in a rush, dh is American and he was the main support. Personally and having been there myself , I would think twice about leaving my family behind, as Olaf said , it's not the same to come here on vacation than it is to live, I miss my family because I have nobody here.

We have a couple of earlier threads on this which I'll try to find.

Also, Sarah aka madmouse is emigrating and posted a few days ago that their visas had come through and they would be leaving mid January - perhaps you could send her a PM ?

..... Hi again! I have only found the thread that you posted back in March but Dave had posted some good info on it.

I hope Sarah is still about to give you some advice as I know she has overcome several hurdles to realise their dream.
