PLEASE SAVE TOBY!

My friend, Tina has a sweet and loving yellow lab named Toby. He's 2 years old and in good health with the exception of 2 recent minor wounds. (read below)

Recently, due to a change in living conditions, they had to give the dog up to the animal control in Liberty county, GA - they thought that they were giving it to the humane society.

The next day, when I heard that they had been unable to find Toby a home and were forced to take him to the animal control, I immediately told them to get the dog back and that I would find him a home. Especially since they had told her that he would only have 3 days before they put him down.

The following day, her boyfriend (Joe) went into the shelter with pictures of the dog, and one of his toys and claimed that he had lost his dog. He went in and there was Toby... but not in the same condition that he had been when Tina took him in just 2 days before. He now had a gapping sore on one of his legs and his face had blood on it. When Joe saw Toby in the pin, he called for him. Toby was so excited and ran towards the gate. The the other 4 dogs that were in the pin with him, including a pit bull vicously attacked him. The attendant went into the pin to "break it up" and started hit and kicking the dogs violently.

Joe was outraged and demanded his dog back. The man told him that it would be a $30 fee. Joe didn't have ANY money on him and since it was Saturday the bank was already closed. So, he begged. The man still refused, but told him that if he would come back the following morning, with the money, he would be able to save his life.

Joe is going on Sunday morning to rescue Toby. However, after then, his fate is uncertain. Money is tight for them, and they cannot keep him at their house.

Where we live, technically we aren't allowed animals. But, we will be willing to take the risk and keep it for one night, since we realize that most places are not open on Sunday.

However, we must find Toby a temporary home or a good shelter or something by Monday afternoon at the latest.

If you know of anyone that who would love to have a sweet, and gentle yellow lab who needs a good home, please let me know as soon as possible.

Email me at theatrebum20@yahoo.com. I can give you my number at that time. The dog is located in the Savannah, Georgia area.

I thank you all for your time and hope someone out their can help.

I have cross-posted this into an animal rescue forum. I hope it helps!

Oh thank you soooo much miste76! I just hope we can find something in time!

They can post and ad for Toby as well they have a message area where they could ask for rescue help. There are many people with connections to rescue organizations as well as those that foster.

I'm praying that they are able to get Toby out of that horrible situation and into a wonderful home.

Here's a  for Toby. I wish I were closer. My Whickey (yellow lab) would love a playmate. Good luck finding a safe, secure home for him.

I wish Toby all the best. It's important for anyone considering placing a pet in a facility, in the hope of finding it a home, to ASK QUESTIONS FIRST. Most people know that animal control facilities only have a limited time in which they will house a dog. The same is true of humane societies. The best option for anyone in this position is to get the number of their local rescue association for that breed. There are Golden Retriever Rescue groups all over the country. Poodle rescue associations as well. A lot of poodles end up in rescue because they are often the favorite breed of the elderly who can no longer care for them or they die unexpectedly, leaving the dog orphaned.

I live in Liberty county GA. I have a fenced in backyard and will be willing to take him temporalily until you can find someone. The only condition is he has to be able to get along with my other dogs and my children. I have a cocker spaniel and a maltese. If you want to drop him off to me today, pm me.
Edited to add- I need to make sure he has his shots too.

If these places are full, they will at least be able to help you find a better place to put him or possibly a foster home.

Also, if you are willing to drive, check for rescues in your surounding states. Saving his life may take a long drive one day, but I think it sounds like your friends are willing.

Take care and good luck,
keep us updated.

I would definitely check with rescue. They will foster a dog until they can find him a good home.

Were they able to get him yesterday?

I hope you find a home. Have you thought about contacting the newspaper or local tv to tell them what happened? Maybe they will do a story and post his picture for adoption.

That is really nice of you to help Toby out. The poor labbie must be so confused, they so get attached to their owners. It would have to be a matter of life or death before I dumped my boy off somewhere.

Well I have contacted mommyof2disneyholics and hope we can house for a few days.

My friend has a list of all the humane places and is starting to call for placement if that must happen.

That is all I have right now but hopefully by tonight I will have more.

Thank you sooooo much everyone. I am at a loss for words at everyone's concern and well wishes. I am confident Toby will find a wonderful home soon.

If you could get him to Missouri and he's good with children as most labs are we'd take him. Mr. B (black lab rescued now age 1) needs a brother.

This is so sad!!!!! There was a DISer who posted here about a week ago looking for a dog, does anyone remember who it was? This could be the dog for her!

Just wanted to let all who were concerned know that I talked to Joe a little bit ago and he is dropping off Toby to my house in the morning. I'll post a pic of him tommorrow evening for all to see!

That is so wonderful of you! The DIS is an amazing place.

Great news. At least Toby is safe for now.
