When my extended family goes to the beach, we usually rent a house at Isle of Palms, SC. This year we want to try something different. I found a great house with a pool at Emerald Isle, NC. Has anyone been here before? What is it like? Has anyone been to both beaches and can compare the two? Are there some shopping areas near?

Also, can someone give me some info on the Emerald Isle bridge. How long is the drive over it and is it scary? My mom does not like big bridges and I would like have some info for her.

Thanks

I lived near Emerald Isle at one time. The NC aquarium is right there, and it is a great place to visit. The beaches were beautiful. Great for shelling, and occasionally a sand dollar would wash up. Great swimming, although I do remember a lot of rip currents.

I lived on base, so I can't help with condo rental.

I don't remember the Emerald Isle bridge being too scary. It's nothing like the really long one up further along the eastern shore. That one even has rest stops, and tunnels on it.

Good luck!:sunny:

We like Emerald Isle alot. The bridge isn't scary at all (I don't like bridges either). I've never been to Isle of Palms so I can't compare and I don't like to shop so I have no comment about that either. Seems there are alot of beach type shops though. It's more of a laid back beach, not anything like Myrtle Beach.

The bridge isn't scary at all!! In fact, the view from the top is beautiful and one of my favorite places in the county. Emerald Isle is great if you want to relax. Will you have an ocean view?

Yes, the house is Oceanfront. It was too good of a deal to pass up. We're paying the same price for a 6 bedroom oceanfront beach house with a pool, elevator, gameroom, internet access, and many little extras as we do for just a plain 4 bedroom oceanfront house at Isle of Palms. I then got worried that maybe it was too good of a deal and that maybe there was a reason the houses are lower in this area. I have since been asking around and everything I hear has been positive, so I am excited.

We actually prefer Isle of Palms to Myrtle Beach because we don't care for all the crowds and commercialism. We like a laid back, quiet beach vacation.

If you're a non Myrtle Beach person then you'll love Emerald Isle. The beach is very quiet and the restaurants are really nice. If you have kids they'll love all of the putt-putt and arcade venues.

I agree with a previous poster, the bride is the best view in the county.

Squatters and The Crab Shack are two that I know off the top of my head.
