Elsa's un-forseen popularity?

I think Disney underestimated how many girls (and women) feel like outsiders. Elsa's character really isn't well developed. Nothing like Anna's, but we just relate to Elsa.

I don't buy this reasoning. Think about it. Aren't most if not all of Disney's heroes/heroines outsiders?

We have:

Ariel
Simba
Belle
Tramp
Cinderella
Hercules
Mulan
Snow White
Bambi
Pinocchio
Alice
Dumbo
Aladdin

I left some out because It either wasn't quite as obvious or didn't apply.

Just looking at the princesses Belle, Ariel, Cinderella, Snow White and Jasmine. They are all "outsiders" that overcome their issues or origins...

Disney sometimes is too focused on the $$ to know their audience...

Wanted to share this photo. (Is it showing up?). My daughter is hoping to add on to her prom dress from two years ago and possibly be Elsa for Halloween. I think it's do-able. She's pretty crafty.

Every person who wants to sing 'Let it Go' wants to be Elsa.
Not every person. :thumbsup2

Well, on paper, Anna should be the one we all like. She's funny and nice. She sets out to save her sister and does as well as saving herself. She punches a jerk in the face and has some great one-liners! We do love Anna, but...

...she's no Elsa. ;) I think Disney underestimated how many girls (and women) feel like outsiders. Elsa's character really isn't well developed. Nothing like Anna's, but we just relate to Elsa.
You right about that.....she aint no Elsa. But, Olaf is my favorite over all the characters!!!!! Now- I went in thinking I would like Anna better because Elsa looked stuck up and smug-----that's the aura she gave me in the previews. I loved Anna in the beginning of the film. I believed I was right about liking her the best until Elsa's coronation party. Anna's bratty behavior at that ball left me stunned. I mean- I was appalled by that....and all for a guy that who later left you to die alone....and tried to murder your sister? :confused3 I don't believe Anna deserve to have Kristoff. I am upset that the writers made Anna look so bad----and I wanted to like her. I like Elsa's power more than anything else and she seems nicer than Anna. Anna was more than ready to trash their relationship for a guy she just met two minutes before. Frozen is all about Anna...but it's strange that I want to know more about Elsa. :confused3

Maybe because Elsa sang the song that won the Academy Award.

Every person who wants to sing 'Let it Go' wants to be Elsa.

I don't think Frozen is all about Anna. It is called Frozen - it is about Elsa - from the beginning you are trying to figure out her story. Her story is told through her relationship with her sister that is also frozen.

I think people like Elsa b/c she is gorgeous and has a beautiful voice. She is also a mystery in some ways. I don't think most little kids like her because she is an outsider. That concept doesn't really resonate with small children but only teens/adults.

These are all good points here. I should have said- that we saw more of Anna in the film......and Anna is gorgeous too-----she just don't have any sparkles......that's a real shame when the movie has sparkly ice and snow with sparkles everywhere.......it may seem small but- people notice things like that. :rotfl2:

Haha!!!!!! I will admit that Hans was charming and he could have fooled me like that too. :rotfl2: But- I would not have turned on my only sis.

I don't really agree. She was desperate for love because the only person in her life that she felt connected had rejected her love for years and years. She was naive- unsurprisingly in her situation. Lots of people make bad mistakes with their first romance. It's not an indictment of their character.

These are all good points.....I get that Anna was excited about her new found love interest. But- that was Elsa's special night-----there is a time and place to discuss things......especially personal matters like that. Anna told Elsa that she want Hans and all his big brothers to move in the castle. Then- as Elsa turns to leave to keep from freezing the place.....Anna snatches off her glove-refuses to give to back and shouts at poor Elsa. I don't know how to look past that. :confused3

I've only seen the movie once (can't wait for our Blu-ray to arrive!:goodvibes) but as far as things the protagonists do when they're stressed, I think Elsa refusing to come down the mountain and at least try to unfreeze the world was a bigger offense. I like that both the heroines are flawed people who are working through their problems.

Elsa was originally written as a villan who was jealous of
Anna, and they were not sisters. They changed her character during the composing of the songs at the suggestion of the composers.

The composers of the songs talk about it here in this video:

Maybe they didn't create all the merch for Elsa because of that.
This may be why I did not like Elsa at first. I honestly was expecting her to be quite vengeful in the movie.

Elsa was still learning how to use her powers.....she was afraid because all the people believed she was into sorcery and witchcraft.....and Elsa didn't know how to make the snow storm stop. So- that did not offend me as much as Anna's selfishness. :sad2:

Despite all that, I'm more of an Elsa person, but I love Anna.
You make all good points here.....I can respect that. :thumbsup2
