Elementary Principal Bans Tag During Recess
Chasing Game Considered Dangerous

ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- Tag, you're out.

Tag is as much a tradition at recess as the lunch lady is in the cafeteria. But when youngsters at a suburban Boston school go outside, they'll get in trouble if they try to play tag.

Students at Willett Elementary School in Attleboro can no longer play tag during recess. The same goes for touch football and other unsupervised "chasing" games.

The school's principal said there's too much risk of injury to children during games like tag. Officials are also afraid if someone gets hurt, the school will get sued.

Principal Gaylene Heppe is in her second year as principal at the school.

Parents are divided.

Debbie Laferriere -- who has two children at the school -- said playing tag is part of being a kid. She told the Sun-Chronicle of Attleboro that unsupervised games help children develop social skills that can be valuable later in life.

"I think that it's unfortunate that kids' lives are micromanaged, and there are social skills they'll never develop on their own," Laferriere told the paper.

Other parents said it's ironic that schools are banning games like tag at a time of rising concern over childhood obesity.

"I think it's a little bit silly," said parent Christine McAndrews. "The kids love to play pick-up football games that they organize themselves. It's great for their social skills and they resolve things on their own. It's good for them."

But another parent, Celeste D'Elia, said she's witnessed a lot of "near collisions" between children and supports anything that makes the playground safer.

According to the paper, Willett Elementary is not alone. Schools in Cheyenne, Wyo. and Spokane, Wash. banned tag at recess. A suburban Charleston, S.C., school not only banned tagged, but outlawed all unsupervised contact sports.

Yep that would be my hometown. my parents sent my siblings to that school - I went to the Catholic school where we almost killed each other playing capture the flag.

Well, lets wrap all the kids up in bubble wrap and sit them in the corner so they don't get hurt. Dumb!

Yeah, I think that's what's next! ;) :sad2:

Good grief. Chasing, running, playing, making up rules...that is what kidhood should be about.

This is unfortunately a knee jerk reaction to our litigious society. Who do you blame - the school for being silly over a simple game or the people that sue schools for silly things???

I wonder if the kids will even be allowed outside 20 years from now..

Oh no, the horror! Children actually running on the grass! Don't they know how easy they could get injured by stepping on something uneven, like the earth? They should walk very slowly, and very carefully. And lets put at least a 5' movable fence around each child so they can't have any contact whatsover with anyone else near them. And parents, no more hugging your children unsupervised, they might accidently hit their head on yours injuring them!

(Anyone want to guess which side I'm on? I'm losing the ability to run - at this point, I am almost to the point where I would give almost anything to be able to play tag)

Absolutely ridiculous. I would be tempted to pull my kids out of the school and send them somewhere where they could actually…be a kid! I would certainly let them know how absurd I thought this was.

:rotfl: My kids school doesn't even have grass for them to run on. They close off the street for recess.

Am I the only one who doesn't totally disagree with this? Maybe it's just because I'm not as far removed from childhood, but "tag" generall;y included a good number of people taking out their agressions on others.

I totally agree! :thumbsup2

Our school has not banned tag, but has had to place a few rules on the game becaue many children were being aggressive, and getting hurt. There was a lot of puching and shoving instead of "tagging." The kids were warned, and were told if the aggression continued, they would not be allowed to play tag. (Mind you, this is First Grade, and children are still being taught what is appropriate behavior on the playground). They have also not made it an "official" rule, just an informal form of discipline.

It's pathetic!!! How else are kids going to get exercise? If they can't run, they're just going to sit, not good. OH!!! They could just as easily "trip" walking and hold the school liable.

If that's truly the motivating factor, then all physical education activities should be stopped immediately.

My son fractured a finger while playing football in PE. I suppose I could have sued the school. ;) ;)

Probably not but I would be surprised if there were many of you. I am extremely familiar with this school. I know faculty there, my siblings went there, and I have friends with children currently at the school. There was no need for this rule to be put in place.

No one is making them play. That is what recess is all about. Freedom, and play.
