Elem. kids.....rolling backpacks????

I teach and I have seen several children hurt from tripping over their own rolling backpack.......... Then there are the kids that run into others with them......... And the few kiddos that use them as battering rams to get down the hall.:scared1:

DD14 is in HS her bp weighs between 30 and 40lbs, and yes I am worried about her back. Unfortunatly with her locker being upstairs a rolling bp won't help. I make sure she wears it properly, on both shoulders and not too loose. We looked to see which was closer, the bus pick up or the parent pick up, the bus was closer, so she rides the bus but I pick her up at the stop. I also check with her teachers to see if extra books were available, unfortunatly none where, but the biology teacher said they could leave the books at home most of the time(she always told them 2 days before they needed it in class). Some teachers are aware of the problem of heavy bp and will try to lighten the load if asked and if they can, some looked at me like I had 2 heads:confused3 .

Well, in my opinion, the kids must carry rolling backpacks with them. Being a parent, I always prefer to give rolling backs to my children because the bags help them in carrying their stuff. No matter which grade they are, these bags provide a relief that my children won't suffer from muscle pain. I have reviewed some awesome rolling bags for my kids. You guys can also review from different websites and maybe this will change your mind regarding the backpack-type for your kids.

Since this thread is from 2017, the OP has probably made a decision about that backpack by now.

Actually, the first post was in June, 2007. Those kids have finished high school - maybe even college. And with distance learning due to COVID, most kids aren’t even carrying/rolling backpacks to school.

Lol. I just looked at the thread above the one I quoted.

deleted my post...didn’t realize i answered an old post :)

PLEASE NO ROLLING BACKPACKS! I am a first grade teacher. My students don't even have books to bring back and forth. All they have to carry are a few folders and some papers. The rolling backpacks cause nothing but accidents. Elementary kids want to run...they don't know the meaning of "walk". They are always tripping over each other as it is!

Just my 2 cents...what they want and what they need are two very different things!
Third grade teacher here... so agree ! Please no rolling backpacks!

I realize this is an old thread and I always thought the rolling backpacks were silly, but my 4th grader begged me for one this year and I caved. They switch classes for each subject and he has to carry all his textbooks, binder, 5 notebooks, pencil case etc. His backpack weighs a ton. He’s a competitive swimmer so fairly strong. He has to steady himself when he puts his backpack on his back. But for kids with just one or two teachers, I’d agree they arent necessary.

I agree...no rolling backpacks! I teach middle school and our kids are required to keep their backpacks in their locker during the day, anyway. The ones with the wheels won't fit in the lockers so I ended up with a pile of bags in my classroom.

LL Bean is having a big sale right now. Some of their backpacks are under $20! Click on the "Sale" link on the left side of their main site. :)
Wow you have lockers? Lol my kids schools did not allow rolling backpacks. And most of the classes in older grades now are using class sets for books so there is very little to carry around.
(Zombie thread I know but sometimes the info still helps)

I'm surprised that carrying tons of books around is still required for kids. I remember years ago Apple was making a big push to make textbooks available on iPads. With how many students have iPads or tablets of some kind, I figured their backs would be less strained than my was. 🙃
