Electric or Gas Cooktop?

Ferguson sounds like a great option for us for appliances! Could you please let us know if this is a national chain, and what is their website? I tried searching and couldn't find them. Thank you!

google ferguson showrooms (also under build.com) and in the top righthand corner is a showroom locator. i believe they are nationwide.

We have a few Ferguson showrooms here in Austin. Pro tip: when we made our appointment to go look at fixtures for our bathroom remodel the salesperson said, “I’m going to add you into our system as a designer so you get the designer discount.” He made a contractor account for us right on the spot. When I was ready to order I went online and ordered everything through that account on build.com.

we ended up going with a company called Ferguson. i highly recommend them-the sales people are 'old school'-they know the products they sell, the customer service is excellent-and if you have ANY question or problem they are SO responsive. if they can't address it they facilitate communication/repair with the manufacturer FAST. when we price compared we saw that with some brands the manufacturer offers the same sales to all their authorized sellers so while the big box stores may seem like they are have a crazy good sale the same sale is had at the smaller more responsive sales environment.
Does Ferguson install or just deliver?

One more plug for Ferguson… a plumbing fixture we ordered (freestanding tub filler) arrived with significant damage. I called Ferguson and told them the situation and they not only rushed me a replacement but refunded the cost of the original tub filler. The tub filler was the most expensive plumbing fixture in the bathroom, so this was quite a surprising and welcomed bit of positive customer service on the part of Ferguson.

I will remember it when and if we do any other major remodels. I didn’t find a cooktop in their showroom that works for our space sadly. I really wanted to splurge with a Wolf cooktop.

Yes, Ferguson is nationwide. I bought my plumbing fixtures from them when I remodeled 10 years ago. When I needed a new canister for my Kohler toilet, they searched and the only one in their inventory was in Florida, so that is how I know they are nationwide. Ended up ordering the part direct from Kohler.

Grew up with electric, had gas in my own place and hated it: was scared of the ligher click click the gas, the flame, almost set myself on fire wearing along shirt with dangling sleeves., off gas smell cleaning biggest PIA.

have glass cermanic.. love it due to the residual heat. If I have a big pot of sauce cooking I simply turn it off and it cooks on its own for a long time to set the sauce, if I dont want heat, I slide simply over. I have a pressure cooker and I know if all rings are out just turn off and let sit and residual heat will continue.. drawback is surfaces stay hot.

I dont get how gas is "more precise" I mean there are so many variables still, equipement, flame size etc... I think regardless of gas or electric, one needs to get to know their stovetop and work with it...

We were thinking of induction next, but I really got cooking with my residual heat down to a science.

Their website is vague on that. They ask if you have chosen a contractor but never directly say they can provide one. They have a store in our area and I would describe it as a higher end kitchen/bath design center with a lot of items on display. I have purchased some repair parts from their parts department, but haven't used them to purchase appliances.

I will always ONLY have a gas stove. Even if the electricity goes out, you can use a match and light the burners on top. It’s been very helpful during the hurricane seasons and Texas Icepocalypse.

For all the bakers out there: I like to bake - delicate cakes, cookies, etc. Has anyone had problems baking in a gas oven? From what I have read, the heat in a gas oven is more moist, compared to the heat in electric ovens which is a dry heat. Have you had to make adjustments to recipes and baking temperatures if you previously had an electric oven and switched to gas? Do your cakes and cookies turn out as well with a gas oven as they did with an electric oven?

I guess I do also have a gas stove. My propane grill. But it's outside where leaks and toxic emissions are not an issue.
My wife's stepmother lived in Texas and after Rita they shutoff the natural gas for two months because of the leaks in damaged houses. The electricity was out for six weeks. She had a generator but only enough fuel to run it a week, and then you couldn't get gasoline. But she did discover during the first week, the only thing that did NOT shutdown, the Cable TV!

my stove/oven and other gas powered appliances run off propane. my generator as well. we see issues with gasoline access when there are major power outages but since we have a 1000 gallon tank and top it off twice per year we are generaly in good shape.

Zoning laws are all over the place on how much fuel you can store and where. I don't think you can have a tank that big in a residential area here. I know at the TV stations, which are in industrial areas, the limit is 500 gallons. At our transmitter, in the middle of nowhere, the tank is 1,000 gallons.

How is your bathroom remodel going? I remember you guys stayed away for a week or so. Are you back in the house? You must be to have found the gas leak for the kitchen stove. Thank God you or someone was there to notice it. 🙏

We don’t have any kind of tank for our stove. Gas lines throughout the city and we pay a monthly bill.

Leaks and toxins? Well we can go as far back as my great grandmother having gas appliances and none of us had problems. Just the same old stroke or congestive heart failure that has killed every ancestor in the family for at least as many generations they have recorded that way. 🤷‍♀️

Barkley mentioned having a 1,000 gallon tank. Yes, we have gas lines in our area. After the 2010 San Bruno explosion we get regular updates on the fact I live within 1,000 feet of a gas line even thought I live in an all electric subdivision. THAT is my concern with gas, and the fact I am not familiar with how to cook with it. The health concerns are secondary for me.

We are almost done with the remodel… knock on wood. Our quoted 3 week remodel turned into 6.5 weeks and counting. Hopefully done by next week. It’s fully functional now and we could technically be using it but we are waiting for one more new window and our window coverings to be installed. Then we are done!

It has been quite the ordeal and I don’t recommend a home remodel to anyone unless it’s truly necessary. Lol. Maybe I’ll change that opinion when it’s all over with.

Yes, so thankful we were home when the stove started leaking. The gas company was here so fast!

not sure what the traditional residential restrictions are here but our tank is larger than most homes even on the other rural residential properties near us have. we had to be on a wait list for a couple of years to upsize but when we ran the numbers on how much it would take for our whole home generator to operate for the maximum number of days we've seen our winter impacted roads impassable for a propane truck 1000 gallons fit the bill. it's been interesting to watch the price of propane as compared to other heating and cooking fuels-it's decreased in price almost 25% per gallon over the past couple of years :thumbsup2

Yes, I sure noticed a difference a couple of weeks ago when I filled two of my 5 gallon propane tanks. Way down.
