Eight year old found hanging by hook in school bathroom.

But if the entire class was on a bathroom break and she was waiting in the hallway for them, they should have all gone together and come back together.

Exactly. The teacher was not paying attention.

That's if they were all together. It just said "a teacher" was outside the bathroom, not his teacher, didn't it? I don't remember.

I'm thinking the whole class wasn't there because surely somebody - at least one kid would have told the teacher (especially if the kid was in his class). Plus, it can take quite a while for the whole class to go, especially if they only have a few stalls and sometimes kids just need to take longer.

Exactly. The teacher was not paying attention.

When we take a class at a time, the classroom usually lines up and three or four boys go in at a time. But sometimes if more than one class is lined up, there are other kids going, as well. It can get pretty hectic.

I agree, though, that the teacher wasn't doing a good job of monitoring the bathroom. That absolutely should not have been able to happen.

But here we reach a Catch 22: The teacher isn't allowed to monitor INSIDE the bathroom -- that opens the possibility of sexual preditor type stuff. No one wants adults inside possibly peeking through the cracks at kids in the stalls, or looking over the stalls. Or if the boys have urinals without stalls, that's worse. And the honest teachers -- the majority -- really don't want to monitor inside bathrooms because they don't want anyone to CLAIM that they were trying to catch a glimpse of a kid with his pants down.

So the teacher's standing at the bathroom door monitoring who's coming in and out. Say the bathroom has three stalls. Three kids are in there. The bully-kids -- if they'd planned it ahead of time -- could do their part in a minute or two. And the teacher'd think that the victim-kid was just slow in doing his business.

Methods to deal with kids THIS MESSED UP just don't exist. They shouldn't be allowed around other children, but they have so many rights . . .

To bad this kid wasn't screaming his head off, he would have been found earlier.

The article doesn't say whether he was gagged, but the lack of noise makes me suspect he might've been. This is quite a crime to be composed by 2nd graders.

I'm told to go into the bathroom. It makes me very uncomfortable if there are older boys at the urinals. There is a short wall thing that shields the urinals from the doorway. If the teacher were standing in the doorway, even with her back to the bathroom, surely she would have heard something?

The boys who did it to him could have been older, though. It said he was unconscious, so I don't know at what point that happened, though he said he remembers them lifting him up onto the hook. :(

You're absolutely right. I made the assumption that they went as a class. :flower3:

I didn't think of that.

It's kind of weird for me to think that 2nd -5th graders are in the same school

Here it k-2
3-5
6-8
and then high school

Our school goes from age 3 (early intervention pre-school) thru 6th grade. My oldest DS was 12 1/2 when he finished elementary. (My youngest because he stayed back will be 13 when he finishes elementary). He and many of his compatriots (given that at least one of them was 6 ft tall) could easily have lifted an 8 yo onto a hook, especially if the child was small.

ETA - not that 6th graders and 2nd graders is likely to happen in our school as the pre-schoolers - K have bathrooms in their classrooms, and all the other grades each have their own separate wings/halls.

Really? Where do you live? I've never heard of schools like that. Here it's K-5th. In Michigan and Ohio when I went to school it was K-6th.

incredibly sad story!

It says the county said there was a teacher outside the door - that could be the county just cover their butts. Which would explain why nothing was heard. BUT I don't get why the kid didn't scream? I'm gonna make sure my kids know to scream scream scream! Except for the fact that he said they tried to break his neck - so was he unconcious by the time the hung him up?

And he said it was "guys" that could be any age....

I am guessing since he was found unconscious, that he was being choked by his clothing and couldn't breathe at all, much less scream. When someone can't breathe, all they can think of is getting a breath, not calling for help. (this is also why children drown silently).

He might could have kicked his legs, but in his panic he likely didn't think of that, or perhaps he did and no one heard.

Fortunately he was found before he had permanent brain damage! It only takes 4-6 minutes for that to happen, so he had to have been found when he had been unconscious for less time than that. The whole event from being hanged to being found could have taken place in as little as 5 minutes.

A truly horrible thing. Imagine the terror the poor little guy felt. :sad1:

I heard about it the day it happened as it is in a neighboring town. Here are some of the original stories.

The first one states that he was in a handicapped stall where the hooks were lower. The second one states that the kids go in 2 to 3 at a time and when he did not answer the teacher she got the security guard.
