Hi,

We are leaving for the Egypt Adventures by Disney in the last two weeks of September. For any of you who have already gone, what is the best way to get Egyptian currency. Neither AAA nor my bank will convert USD to the Egyptian pound.

Thanks in advance!!

A currency exchanger might have it. Or just bring USD and exchange when you pay the entry fee and get your passport stamped at the airport. Alternatively pulling money from ATMs when needed or using a local currency exchange (they all have the same rate, the pound is government controlled). You'll need your passport to exchange money at an exchanger.

If you’re staying at the Nile Ritz Carlton, wait until you get there to exchange money. They have a bank and ATM in the hotel. The representative who picked me up at the airport also checked me into the hotel and exchanged money for me. I did pre-nights on my own and booked several tours before the ABD. Everyone I tipped and most stores preferred USD. If you’re out and about and need a bathroom, you’re expected to tip if you take tissue from the attendant. If you don’t take any, you don’t tip. Bring your own as TP isn’t always stocked. Of course, when you’re with ABD it isn’t an issue. Exchange only $5 or $10 at a time. I initially exchanged $30 and would up never using it. I eventually used part of it to tip the Egyptian ABD guide.

Use an ATM Or a Proper Bank

Provided you have a Chip & Pin Debit Card Or Credit Card.

Exchange Booths at Airports are a " rip Off "

Cheques are a thing of the past

Other than tipping and bargaining in the market, use a transaction free credit card like Chase Marriott - while we were there the Egyptian currency lost about 10% of its value. Everyone gratefully takes dollars. Start with the ATM at the Nile Ritz Carlton and that's probably all you'll need.

FYI, we ran into ATMs that were out of cash several times (at the Nile Ritz Carlton and at airports). The ATMs didn't say they were out, but we made sure there was nothing wrong or blocked on our cards, and they worked at other ATMs. Our ABD guides said it's not uncommon.
