I am having a Christmas party and want to have eggnog, but everything at the stores I see is non-alcoholic. Could I just buy some of the store bought eggnog and then add in some rum? If so, how much rum should I add per pint of eggnog? Thanks!

I like a 4 parts eggnog to 1 part rum ratio, with freshly grated nutmeg and some vanilla mixed in.

I also use roughly the same ratio/ingredients with bourbon, though I omit the vanilla.

I don't know.I usually use Brandy in my eggnog. I know some people mix dark rum and brandy. I do just add it to the storebought stuff, but I do it by the glass. I have one recipe that says 1/3 cup Captain Morgans dark rum and 3/4 cup brandy for one large punchbowl of eggnog. You could start small and adjust to taste?? Hope someone can answer specifically for you. I'll be interested to know to.

We usually use Brandy and then nutmeg sprinkled on top. The amount would be to your taste. After a couple it probably grows. :teeth:

I won't even attempt the math! I use 1 shot of brandy for a coffee-mug size cup of egg nog.

Please, please, please use REAL nutmeg!! You can probably get it whole form at your grocery store (McCormick has it) & a no-name microplane or spice grater is less than $10 & well worth it! Once you try it, you'll never go back to the powdered stuff.

I use Southern Comfort in egg nog. Here is the recipe I got off the carton:

Easy Comfort Eggnog (for 10)
1 c. Southern Comfort
1 qt. dairy eggnog
Ground nutmeg

Chill liquid ingredients. Blend in punch bowl by beating. Dust with nutmeg.

Easy Comfort Eggnog (for 1)
1 oz. Southern Comfort
4 oz. dairy eggnog
Ground nutmeg

Chill liquid ingredients. Combine in a short glass and stir. Dust with nutmeg.

I use southern comfort, about the same measurement as the PP put up.

I just buy it in the liquor store, its already premixed. The ones in the supermarket are all alcohol free.

Rum or Brandy are both fine to use, as is good whisky. I would say a shot per 6-8 oz. I would taste-test it first (not being funny here. :drinking: ) I have seen it at the liquor store, as aprilgail2 said. Frankly I prefer to make it from scratch time permits. It is much better than store bought!!! However, when you realize all that goes into it you can get shocked at the calories.
Hooray for serving it - it is one of my absolute favorites and was a tradition in my family growing up (now gone). My in-laws don't get into it at all, so I am the only one who likes it. It's not as enjoyable now. Thumbs up to you. :thumbsup2

Egg Nog is made with Rum. Period.

The proper ratio is 147 parts Nog to 1 part Nog.
