ECV Safety Warning

Just wanted to relate a stupid thing I did so nobody else makes the same mistake.

I don't normally use an ECV, but had to on the last several trips due to temporary disabilities.

This may seem obvious to others, and in retrospect, it was a very bad idea, but hindsight is 20-20. I had a lightweight plastic shopping bag, only containing a wrapped Christmas ornament that I had purchased. I didn't want it to get jostled in the basket, along with heavier items we had in there.

I purchased this right before leaving the park, so I wouldn't have to carry it around. Initially, I had placed the bag on the floor between my feet. Prior to getting on the bus, I decided to hang it on the "trigger" of the ECV. No problem getting ECV on the bus, backing it into it's place, and the ride back to the resort.

However, somewhere along the trip, the handles of the bag must have been shoved closer to the inside. When I was driving down the ramp, I went to just inch forward, but when I let off the trigger, the ECV kept moving! For a second, I didn't realize what had happened and grabbed the bars of the bus to try to stop myself and the ECV.

Thankfully, I quickly realized that the bunched up plastic of the bag handle was stuck behind the trigger, engaging the ECV. I grabbed it out quickly and it stopped. I could have ran over the driver at the bottom of the ramp, or other guests, or rolled myself and the ECV off the side. Had I hung it there at the park, I could have ran over a child or anyone. It's a very scary thought.

Never, ever hang anything from this trigger. I don't need to be told what a stupid idea it was, I feel very embarrassed and like I endangered a lot of people not thinking this through. I'm only admitting to this lapse of intelligence, on my part, to hopefully save someone else from doing it in the future. It doesn't take anything thick to wedge in and make an ECV move. Just very thing plastic did it. Don't do it.

I am SO glad you weren't hurt! And I have to say, I am quite impressed that you figured it out (literally) in the midst of the chaos! I want to believe I am, but I'm truly not sure I would have been so level-headed.

This is great information for everyone to remember. Thank you for sharing that!

I applaud you for sharing your information with us. Your experience with this seemingly small error may have saved someone from a terrible accident!

Thanks!!!

Good advice. I think anyone who reads about your experience will remember it if they ever think about hanging something from the tiller. I know I will!

Great advice! Accidents happen but learning from things like this and sharing it can help prevent an even worse accident from happening. Thankfully no one was hurt which is the most important part.

I am impressed myself, as I am not good in panic situations. I think I had just looked at it, to see if it was stuck down or something. I really don't remember. It all happened very fast.

Hope this helps prevent someone from doing the same thing.
