Recently on ebay you could list things for free. I had some spare time so I listed a bunch of stuff and made about $150. Its not a ton but every little bit helps and I figured with free listings I couldn't go worng.
Do they have promotions like this often? I'd love to try listing somethings again but I don't know if I want to risk things not selling with the listing fees.

anything "free" on ebay is all relative once you factor in Final value fees, paypal fees etc. The insertion fees are usually the smallest amount of $ unless you are selling larger dollar items.

Debating ebay listings ....

What do you consider a *larger* dollar item?

And can someone give an example of the fees, maybe on a $25 item? Or any amount item?

You mean after the ship fees, paypal fees and ebay fees?

You can go to ebay and look up what fees will be..the amount varies depending on the final value. Yes, the insertion fee is the lowest cost for low value listings, but that is most of what I do, and 25 cents per listing times 100 listings save me 25.00 in fees, which is a nice chunk and keeps me from feeling so bad when things don't sell. I generally figure in that all fees will come in at about 10% give or take...the insertion fee, final value fee, and Paypal fee. Still, I have sold for 14 years and still find it worthwhile for a little hobby type of thing.

How do you find out when their next free listing period is? Never sold on ebay but I have some stuff I keep saying I need to get rid of, maybe if the fees were waived I'd be motivated, lol.

Also...for the shipping fees, don't you charge the buyer whatever it will cost to ship it? So then you'd only have the paypal fees which are 2-3% right? What is: value fee?

Log onto e-bay, go to the community pages, then to announcements, and any specials will be listed there. If you're registered they send e-mail reminders too.

You also pay e-bay a final value fee when your item sells. It's a percentage of the final sales price that ranges from 8% - 15% of the initial $50, and from 5% - 9% of the remaining balance depending on what category you list in. (different percentage for amounts over $1,000, but you can research that for yourself if you're selling high ticket items)

Yeah! Thanks for posting this. I missed the free listing fees that just ended and was waiting for the next one. Not sure why, but I didn't get the email yet.

Whats the difference between auction-style listings and other listings?

Auction style - Means you list the item with a starting price for bidding, with the option to buy it now.

There are Buy It Now only auctions, with the option to Make an Offer. Usually these are people with an "ebay store" that allow for listings to stay up for 30 days. Most auctions only last 7 days.

Ebay fees for a $9.95 item with a $24.95 BIN option
Insertion Fee - 25 cents
BIN fee - 10 cents
Schedule fee - 10 cents (if you would like the item to start at a selected time other than when you are listing it).
Final Value Fee - a percentage based off your rating. Lower rating, higher fee. 7% is about as low as it gets.
PayPal fee - 2-3% when the person pays you.

Ebay generally offers a 100 listings free during the first week of the month. With the occasional offers in the middle of the month.

If you have a highly valued and sought after item, you can start your bidding at a lower price to reduce your fee. If it's a high valued item, but not highly sought after, then start your bid at the higher price, because people will not be in a bidding war at the end to drive the price up.

Example:
Listed a Zojirushi breadmaker, had 47 watchers at the end, and about 20 bids. Sold for 122$, starting bid 75$
Listed an Onkyo remote for a tv, had 3 watchers, and about five bids. Sold for 61$, starting bid 30$
