Eating on site at Disneyland

That makes sense. Actually I read that somewhere else in my travels online, too. More incentive for those close enough or who visit enough to purchase AP's, I suppose. Being that this will likely be our one and only trip, we went for the "5 days for 3" deal! 
There was a pamphlet in with the video that lists the pricing line for some of the restaurants, including the Blue Bayou and the one dh wants to go to.. ESPN Zone. Prices look fairly reasonable to me given the location and how much "press" the Blue Bayou gets on here. Definately have to make that reservation!
I think by the end of this month we'll have things covered, as long as the Loonie doesn't do a nose dive in the markets before we go!

Right, this might be the best kept secret (till now, doh!) in the DL Resort complex. It's between the Grand Californian pool area and DCA's Grizzly River Run. You can get to it by taking the DCA exit near GRR, or the self-guided tour
of the Grand Californian, past Storytellers Cafe and Napa Rose. It's a simple snack bar, but well done at reasonable prices, relatively speaking. I'd recommend ordering something from the grill.Other favorite DCA eaterys are the Pacific Wharf Cafe (take the Boudin Bakery tour first), and Taste Pilots Grill for a beer
and a burger and a beer 
.I would also recommend Rancho Del Zocalo. We were able to share meals there and were all pretty full. Since you are bringing snacks (and going when it can be hot) I would bring your own bottled water. Water is $2.75 to $4.50 a bottle (I was just there Sunday and forgot to bring water as we usually do). This will help keep your budget in line if you bring water yourself, as well as your own snacks.
If you are interested in a character meal, we just checked out Ariel's Grotto in DCA. We went for lunch and the adult lunch was $14.99 and the kids was $10.99. I know this is more than a regular counter lunch, but the food was pretty good and the kids loved the characters!! The kids also got their own pail and shovel to take home. Make sure you make a PS here as the line can be long!!!!
As a treat for ourselves, as well as a cost saver, we try the sit down places at lunch, and eat counter (or outside the park) for dinner. We just find that it is a nice break in the middle of a hot day to be able to do a sit down meal and take a break, then back to commando the rides. Have fun!!

I also recommend Whitewater Snacks in the Grand Californian Hotel. You can get there thru the entrance to the hotel near the Grizzly Rapids water ride.
They have food that come fresh off the grill. When we were there, it was not very crowded, and it was a nice, quiet reprieve from the Disney crowds. The kids' meals are huge and cost around $5. Two kids may be able to share a kid's meal. They had a really delicious grilled chicken with guacamole burger (about $7)that came with fries, but they let me substitute the fries with a small fruit salad. It was yummy, but definitely more than I can eat, because the portions were so big. My DH and I were able to share an adult meal.
In the 5 days we were at DL, we probably ate there about 4 times for lunch!

SKFamily, you've gotten some good tips here!
For my 2 cents though I'd say pass on Blue Bayou (blasphemy!) and spend the money on a hearty breakfast or lunch buffet. OK, this is just my personal style, but I like a big breakfast or lunch and something light later in the day (and, of course, something sweet at night!). I don't know if your 13 year old is a boy or girl, I do know how 13 year old boys can EAT!. I love the breakfast buffet at Storytellers Cafe in the Grand Californian and would choose that over Blue Bayou any day. Better yet, skip a few things before your trip and then spend the money doing BOTH!
As a matter of fact, I have to call Disney dining right now and make a PS for Goofy's Kitchen (dinner) and Carnation Cafe (breakfast....yummmmmy pancakes) right now. I'm being sent to LA on business next Friday......guess where I'm spending the weekend
