Most of our family and friends hated the movie and my sister verbally thrashed me for liking it enough to buy. She thought the character was THE most selfish self absorbed woman of all time.

I agree with your sister (though, trashing you? that's a bit much )

I have NOT seen the movie yet--still can't bring myself to do it.

My issue with this whole "finding herself" and her "transformation"--I felt it tainted. Very tainted. $200,000 book advance tainted. (I think it was that much--that is how she afforded her three country lengthy adventure.)

And her first chapters--complaint after complaint, whine after whine....

Kinda like reading a story about Kate Gosselin camping in Alaska.

The way folks "read" Kate is how I "read" Elizabeth Gilbert. And funny how both (IMHO) were influenced by a paycheck.

Still debating on the movie, but I have a feeling that JR plays EG in a much kinder way than Elizabeth portrayed herself in her book.

Pretty much my feelings, except for the bolded part. I can't stand Julia Roberts. She always come across to me as quite self-absorbed (like the woman she portrays), so I doubt I could sit through the movie.

I didn't get those impressions in the movie at all! Others have said the same thing you did but again I didn't read the book.......so I'm really wondering if the movie is a far cry from it's written counterpart. I really liked the Julia Roberts character and felt like her goal wasn't self absorbed but was meant to help her in her future relationships.
I could care less about her having recieved an advance on the book to be able to afford the travel. That part wasn't even mentioned in the movie and it didn't seem to play a role.........and I'm not sure why it would have made a difference. The money to travel wasn't a part of the story really IMHO.

Good luck deciding on whether to see the movie. I had NO *Kate Gosselin* feelings at all about the character and I know exactly what you meant. LOL LOL

It wasn't in the undertone in her book. I just think her having money provided incentive to be able to have her fit and flutter around the world. Knowing that, I "read" her in a different way.

I mean if someone wasn't feeling all into their marriage and "won the lottery", it makes it easier to walk.

In her book, she never really explained why she walked. Just a lot of complaining about nothing. It was odd.

Since you liked the movie and get her transformation process, the book may read differently.

I heard all the raves--bought the book and wanted to poke my eyes out before she walked out on her husband.

I do think Tex (?) though was hilarious! Kinda hoped he would smack her upside her head and knock some sense into her.

Who plays him in the movie?

I did not enjoy the book. I thought the author was a whiny, bratty, self-absorbed shrew. The "pray" part of the book goes on FOREVER.

I enjoyed the movie. Julia Roberts came off nothing like the character in the book.

My same thought. I made it through the first chapter thinking that it HAD to get better and it didn't. Not a favorite book of mine!

My Daughter and I watched the whole movie, waiting for it to get better. It never did for us. We called it Eat, Pray, Love, Torture! The scenery was nice though.

I loved the book. loved it. can't say enough how much I loved it. Of course, it probably helped that I read it during the breakdown of my own marriage and at a time when I was trying to rediscover myself. It was also very interesting because at the time my dh was having an affair and was leaving me. I was very much "david" in the story, so for me it was facinating to read from the point of view of the person leaving her marriage.

as for the movie, I was iffy on it. but then I usually am on movies I see after I read a book, especially a book I feel so strongly about.

for me eat, pray, love, is about her growth and transformation. yes, she did have a huge advance for her book, but from my understanding, she had left her husband/was in the process of divorce before her decision to travel. her divorce, at least in the book, was dragged out for a looooong time. and I actually applaud her for finding a way to make her desire to travel to come true. not many could finance a year's adventure like this, and to me, finding that financing is admirable.

honestly I think she comes across as interesting and witty and sarcastic and someone who would be a lot of fun to sit down and have a cocktail or two with.
