Easy Bake Oven

DD wants an easy bake oven for Christmas.

I had one as a child and I remember it was a pain....had to slide the pan in just right or it would tip over and spill the batter into the oven, etc. I don't know if I ever got one single thing through it without making a mess.

So anyone have any input on the new updated version????? Is it basically the same as the 70's/80's model? What about mixes for it? Are they hard to find? Are there alternatives to using the mix designed especially for Easy Bake?

They still use a 100W lightbulb to cook the mixes and they can be found at TRU, target, walmart, etc. They are expensive but if you look online you can find recipes that use regular cake mixes.

I got dd one a couple years ago after she begged me for it. We used it 2 times and then it sat in her closet for 2 years collecting dust. I had to throw out the cake and cookie mixes I had for it and pack it up and send it to goodwill.

It wouldn't be possible to tip the pan in mine, so they must have fixed that part. The mixes are waaay to expensive here in Canada, and they're still pretty bad in the states. There are tons of recipes on the internet though

If she needs more pans, order them from the hasbro shop. They are dirt cheap there

Or you might get her interested in some child-size rolling pins, spatulas, etc. to help you out instead of having her own oven.

I can't help you with what the models are like now vs. when we were kids. I don't remember issues with mine as a child and DD never wanted one (she liked to cook "real" things), but I can tell you that you can find recipes for homemade mixes all oer the internet. DD and I made a bunch up for a neighbor girl one year as a gift (as per Mom's request--I know it is a weird gift). If you google "easy bake oven recipes" you will get tons of stuff. DD and i made up about 6 different things and bagged them as "singel bake" and had about 30 or so mixes for the little girl to use. It only took a couple of hours.

I loved mine as a kid too. I don't remember spilling anything or having problems putting the pan in at all. I do remember not being able to find replacement mixes but we just used regular cake mixes and they were fine. Now they are everywhere.

I'm afraid it will end up like mine did.....sitting in a closet (someone else mentioned this too). She does like to help me bake, she loves to make cupcakes and yeast rolls.

I guess I was "easy bake challenged" as a child as I preferred much more to be outside with my BB gun or bow & arrow set...... - yes I was a bit of a tomboy so I guess I was kinda klutzy in the kitchen.

Bought one for DD a few years back when she was younger. She wasn't interested in it since the two of us bake a lot together. I have a lot of packages of "food" and the oven which is just sitting here. I'd make sure she really really wanted it before I would put out all that money for it.

But in answer to your question yes they did improve it a little bit.

Thanks! I'm hoping she will find something she is more interested in and changes her mind. Maybe I should just look into getting her some smaller baking pans to use regular mix in the oven. That way she can make cute little things but still have enough to share.

Any suggestions on smaller pans? Can the easy bake pans be used in a regular oven?

I remember begging for an Easy Bake oven as a child, and my mom told me she would just teach me to bake an a real oven. I was enthralled!

So I did the same thing with my DD when she asked for an Easy Bake oven a couple of years ago. I told her she could bake in the real oven. It's worked out well for us.

She'll probably be just as happy using your cup cake trays, but if you still want to get some pans Wiiliam Sonoma (you can afford to shop here since you'll be saving all the money on mixes ) has cupcake size silicone bakeware (they don't need to be used with a cupcake tray):

Thanks for the links!!!! I will definately check those out. I think I saw some pans at Michael's or Hobby Lobby that were similar to a cupcake pan but they made 4 small little bunt (that doesn't look like I spelled it right) cakes but they had little details in the pan that would come out in the cakes. I'm thinking those might be fun. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Answering my own question:

Wilton's site had a lot of mini pans that make 4 or 6 little cakes. These are really cute!!!!!

My nephew started off in the real kitchen & he's really into baking now. Even completed Wilton course. I vote for skipping the Easy-Bake oven.

My DSIL gave him one drawer in the kitchen for all his own stuff. He's left handed so they bought him all kinds of left handed kitchen gadgets too. I didn't even know they had such things. LOL And a very cool apron of course!

Try ebay for fun pans. And if she turns out she's not into it, I'll bet you could re-sell a Wilton pan way easier than an Easy-Bake oven.

FYI for anyone who still owns one from a few years ago; there was a recall shortly after the holidays. So you could probably contact them and be part of the recall (I don't think recalls ever expire), if you still have one.

It was something about the oven door catching kids and either cutting or burning them...




They have changed visually, at least, since a couple decades ago.

I never thought that a cake pan would be an item that went up in value. But while looking at the pans I noticed at some time they had some Star Wars pans (1980).....well do a search on those......used......$50 and up .....seems they are somewhat of a collector's item.

My sister still has the one's she used and they were 1980's era.....I'll have to tell here she needs to get them out and look them up on the internet and see how much they go for now. I know she had a clown, Big Bird, and a few others.
