Eastern Non DCL excursions

Just wondering if anybody has gone on any non-DCL excursions that they booked on their own in St. Maartin and St. Thomas/St. John. Would you go again? Where did you book them?

On St. Maarten we grabed a cab and headed over to Orient Beach on our own ($7-8 each way per person). Rented chairs and umbrella for about $10. Saved a ton of money over DCL's excursion to the same beach (we didn't get their lunch however )

we caught a taxi to Dawn's Beach in St. Martin. I believe it was something like $18 one way, rented cheap chairs and umbrellas for around $8 bucks. Nice beach, but too choppy for snorkeling when we went. Close in place to eat, and they sell drinks up and down the beach.
