I suffer from this problem chronically and go to an ENT frequently for an ear wash to flush them out. My doctor recently gave me an ear syringe so I could do this on my own. Just a warning though, I did it at home and developed swimmer's ear from the water getting trapped inside my ear canal.
I then developed an infection so bad, that the antibiotics didn't start to clear it up for well over a week. This happened a few days before our trip, and it really put a damper on the first half of my vacation.
Just be careful that you're doing it correctly, so you don't end up with the same problem that I had. I've also heard that ear coning/candling is very effective in removing excess ear wax, and is now done in many spas and salons.
Good luck!
