Earned a Reward Flight - FINALLY!

I have a free r/t flight in my rewards that is good until 5/2013 . . .I see that it probably would be easier to fly down on the reward than return for the times I want.

Is it possible to book 2 one way flights to Orlando for both me and DH and just pay for the flights home?

Also, for those who are experienced with rapid rewards flights, I'm having difficulty deciding if I should just use them now, or wait until Spring 2013. Is is usually harder to get a flight in the Spring on RR than it is say for July/August?

Just don't wanna waste the free flight!

It sounds like this is the old-style award that is actually a free flight rather than the current ones that are awarded via points, right?

Assuming that, yes, you can use the single award for two one-ways in the same direction for 2 people. We frequently did this when one direction of our travel was less popular in some way, therefore award availability was better. These awards are capacity controlled and it sounds like you know that they won't be available for all flights on all days. But it's virtually impossible to predict whether it will be harder to use in Spring or July/Aug. Although in general, the free flight awards are only available for flights that are at the lowest possible price. For example, if it's a heavy travel day or peak holiday, the prices will be higher, and there likely won't be any seats available for booking free-flights via awards.
