Early admission to the parks

I know that parks open early on certain days, how does this work. We are looking at going to MK on Sunday, and I know that is their "opening one hour early" day for people staying on Disney property. Do you just show up, or do you have to call down to the front desk of the hotel? I am not sure how this works, and I figured I better find out before hand.

Some people swear by AVOIDING the park having Extra Magic Hour and some swear by taking advantage of it.

Any suggestions on what to bring besides a room key?? Maybe our confirmation fax for the room or something?? I know it sounds strange, but my mother has a convention there and we are staying with her, and she is going to meet us at the park later on, so we wont even have the key with us. Does that make sense??

she will have to get a room key for each person.

You will have to present a room ID to get into the park. We have had to show a room ID for each of us when we went, including our 9 yr old son.
