Ear problems on plane...with tubes????

We are going to be traveling over the Christmas Holidays for the first time on an airplane with our then 15mo daughter who has tubes in her ears. I have read many things about ear problems on planes for children and wondered if having the tubes would be a helpful thing since the pressure is already released or if they might be a hindrance and we should look into something to help her. I just wanted to see if anyone had any insight into this issue. I have read the past threads but never saw anyone mention anything about kids with tubes.

In your position, I'd give your daughter's pediatrician a call to see what they say. I'd also ask if it's OK to use the EarPlanes product for a child with tubes.

I agree, this is something you really need to discuss with your pediatrician or ENT doctor.

I would probably give my ENT a call, but this is what we were told by our ENT when my oldest daughter had tubes in her ears. Since there is an open passage between the inner and outer ear, there is no problem with pressure pain. We flew shortly after her tubes were placed, and she complained of no pain.

I'm going to preface this by saying you should always consult the doctor, but, in theory, the tubes should actually help her. I have an eustation tube issue, myself (the tube that connects the sinuses to the inner ear). I even had a tube put in at age 26 (temporarily). It takes me days sometimes to recover from a flight. With a tube in place, your daughter's ears will recover faster than yours might. I wish I could have one installed before I go on a flight!

Just flew in June with daughter ,2, in June with tubes. Absolutely no problem.
