DVD rental selections

Most of you are probably thinking why I am asking this. Our kids, ages 3 and 6, will watch a DVD if we need more time to get ready in the morning.

What are the DVD rental selections like at the DVC resorts? How many are usually available and what are some of the titles?

There are probably a hundred or so titles, all Disney Corp produced, G to R rated.

We've checked movies out at WL and AKL ... they both had a huge binder to look through as you select your movie. The selection is great for families, IMO. Any traditional Disney title you can think of ... plus many more.

Not all are Disney. We have found it hit or miss. The girls usually will find an older DVD but not a lot of new titles.

When we were there in December, the binder at Kidani must have had at least 100 DVDs in it.

We didn't rent anything, just checking out the selection, but it seemed varied enough.

There are many selections but try to rent early in the afternoon since after dinner you will find many of the better movies already checked out. If there are movies that are must haves for your family I would recommend packing them.

I didn't think they variety was that great and they were older Disney movies that my dd's were not very familar with. We did go after dinner so maybe that was the problem. In the morning you will have Disney Jr that they can watch as well as PBS.

We've rented at AKV (3 times) and SSR and BWV. All of our rentals were over night only and due back at 10am. You could walk back down and check the same movie out again though, but you had to check back at 10am each time.

In the beginning the kids loved the selection (3 and 5 at the time), but now they've seen everything. There isn't a huge selection for smaller ones.

Hope you enjoy your trip!

Rentals should be free to DVC members.

We did a fair amount of going through several movies before we found one that was not already checked out. Still, my kids watched Bolt, The Rescuers, and A Goofy Movie, and we enjoyed all three. At SSR this past December, we never got to the Community Hall. My kids ended up watching ABC Family, since they had The 25 Days of Christmas going on. They also liked one of the in-house channels - "Company Clips" or something like that? :confused3

My local library has a huge selection of DVD's for rent and they only charge $1 for 7 days. That's cheap and convenient since I wouldn't want to have to return movies in the mornings at the resort.

When we stayed at BLT last April, we rented (or borrowed, since DVC members don't have to pay for the movies) Chicken Little, Cars, and Nemo. There were tons of movies to choose from. I don't remember how soon they had to be returned, but we returned them each morning because we had to walk right by the community hall (or whatever it's called) on our way out to the parks.

The DVD collection is built and kept by each DVC on their own. The newer DVC resorts have smaller collections (Kidani for example had only about 10 pages of titles in the binder when it was new), the older ones have very large collections which seem to be limited only by the amount of drawer space they have to store all the disks themselves.

Selections range from rated G & PG, which are the bulk of the selection and appropriate for the family environment, to a few rated R. Plenty of non-Disney movies have been available at the resorts we've stayed in.

I've found many many titles including brand new releases in the books. I think these may be donated by members, as I can't envision DVC making the effort to purchase new releases in a timely manner. If this is the case I want to say "Thank You!" to those who've shared. Movies are a perfect way to entertain a child who's ingested pool water and not feeling their best and there's a limit to the amount of Disney programming I can take.

More info:

Rentals are free to DVC members staying on points. They will check your room card to be sure this is the case. But once checked even the kids can go down and take out movies on their own without a parent with them providing the movie they want has an appropriate rating.

Some resorts only allow one disk to be out for your room at a time, others have allowed us up to 3. Ask!

Rentals are to be returned by 11am the following morning. You can keep it longer, but they request that you sign it back out for each day you keep it. I know at Kidani they will call us if we forget to return ours the next morning. At VWL either they did not call or we returned them on time - 14 months back is too far to recall ;)

Reviving this old thread. We're heading down in 3 weeks. Any changes/updates to the process? Has it become an afterthought perk that nobody really cares about or do the resorts actually keep up the selection with current titles?

Wow, that is a zombie thread! :)

They haven't made me turn in movies in the morning; they jsut want it back by the end of our stay. BUT they tell you quite firmly that there will be a charge if you don't return it. Somewhere along the lines of $50, so they are serious about it.

Biggest issue now is that your room probably won't have a DVD player in it. If it doesn't, call Housekeeping and they will bring it and set it up for you.

Wow, yes, a zombie thread, but I love the topic. I hope DVC really does read these boards and notices how much many of us really do enjoy having DVD players in the villas.

I remember one trip in particular we were staying at BLT when our 4 kids were younger. It was a night when the pouring rain was not predicted to stop, so we decided to go over to BVG and grab some snacks, then to Community Hall to get a dvd. We chose Hercules, which we feel is one of the most under-rated Disney movies ever! We love it! So back to the villa we went.

Any of you who have kids, who spend many nights driving them to dance, or baseball, or CCD, etc. know how rare it can be to relax together as a family and just watch a movie. We all remember that night so vividly, just hanging out and laughing with the movie.

I hope the DVD selection, and the DVD players, are still there. :) Sometimes it's the little things in a very special place, right?

Honestly, with iPads and Netflix and downloaded videos (from amazon prime, Netflix, Comcast, and just from your home library) this is definitely becoming less and less needed and I wouldn't be surprised if DVC gets rid of this in the future. The demand just might not be there. I do understand that some people really like it though.
