DVCers interested in donating "leftover food"?

After all the responses to Tinkrbells great idea for a Hospality Closet, I have contacted Second Harvest re: food pickup. I also spoke with my guide about this when she called me and got a go ahead.

I am still working out the details with Second Harvest but thought I would get some feedback. DVC Members would leave a plastic grocery bag (or more if applicable) with unopened non-perishable food with the Bellman at checkout. It would be marked with the name of the Second Harvest contact. They would than swing through the 4 DVC resorts and pickup their "packages" from the Bellstands.

I know this sounds over simplistic so there must be at least one snag. If anyone has ideas, let me know, I am supposed to speak to Second Harvest again tomorrow

What a great idea! We always seem to have leftovers and some unopened! I always wish there was something to do with the food since we don't want to pack it and bring it home on the plane.:earsboy:

What a wonderful idea!! Thanks for all the time you are putting in for such a worthy cause.

I will be watching for more info on this.

Great idea.

We usually give our food away to people we see in the hallways.

What a great idea! Also makes it very easy to do at check out - we always have a few unopened items that we leave behind!

Since this is a good idea for all who want to donate, the question now is how to get the word out to all resort residents? A flyer in the room? or a CM mention during checkout? There has to be some way to advertise, discreetly of course, to let the word be known…

This is a terrific idea. There are plenty of food pantries in the area that would be greatful for the donations. As long as we all follow the usual rules for donations (non-perishable, unopened) it will work.

Second Harvest (or another charity) probably already do pick-ips at the Resorts (unused food from the restaurants) so a few extra stops may not be a problem.

As for advertizing, if the DVC Resorts are supporting this venture then they could probably place a flyer within our check-in packets, a notice in our Member updates and a note in the units as well.

This is a wonderful idea! Sandy, thank you for taking the time to look into this. I will keep an eye out on this thread to see what the final outcome is.

GREAT! I hope DVC supports this with whatever they need to do, like printing of flyers etc.

The maids will be starving if we do this!!!! They probably feed their families on the left overs!

They have something like this at other timeshares (ex/Trapp Family Lodge). They have a notice posted in the kitchen that states that any unopened food can be left at check out & will be donated to the local foodbank.

Great idea!!!

What a great idea. Never sure what to do with my unopened food, I usually just leave it on the counter in a bag and HOPE someone from maid service takes it, at least it would not be wasted.

I never thought of this. Disney must have a regular organization that they donate leftover food to already. Maybe that is the organization that needs to be contacted. Since they are already on property, it wouldn't be an inconvenience.

As for notifying members, I think a permanent note on display in each units kitchen is an inexpensive way to get the word out.

Great Idea! We have so much stuff left over, why let it go to waste!

Thank you Sandy for all of your terrific work on this!

I will be watching posts for when this starts. It is such a great idea. I know we had several unused items on this past trip that I would have loved to donate.

This sounds great! Let us know when we should start doing this. Thanks for putting all the "leg" out for this.
