DVC - Wouldn't you go for OKW for less fees?

Not to hijack this thread but I have a question about this...wouldn't it be even cheaper to rent points from a DVCer for your trips, considering you only go once a year? If your maintenance fees are $600+ a year and you have to pay at least $12,600 for ownership, it makes sense, to me, to just rent points. At $10 a point, a stay at OKW at the slower times, would only cost $800 for a one bedroom, $400 for a studio. There are quite a few people renting points on the board, so I don't think you would have a problem renting. Any thoughts? Oh, BTW...DEE, thanks for the list...that's what I was trying to say a few weeks ago, but it didn't come out right! ;)

Rental points may only cost $10 now, but as regular resort prices go up, so will DVC rental point prices.

Sharon,

We only go every other year, but owning is still a good option....

Next trip 2 bedroom BWV Preferred View 7 nights 282 points.

Rental cost: $2820
Maintenance fees ($4 per point for simplicity) $1128
Savings in owning over renting: $1692
Cost of original contract: $10,000
Number of like trips to return investment: 5.9
Number of years to return investment: 12

(Ignores BOTH time value of money and inflation. Also ingores the value I place on my time to bother to rent points, I book my trips in one single simple phone call.).

Crisi,
Thanks for the math. Never took the time or energy to do it. Thanks. Makes me feel even better about my decisions!

Do the amount of points to stay at a resort stay the same over the course of your timeshare, or do they increase every year, like any other resort?

Sharon, the points may go up one of two for one time period during a given year, but they would then decrease during another time period during the same year. There is no inflation in points, but there may be slight changes of one or two points. If one season goes up, another season will go down. It's based on demand. I have been a member since 1998, and I don't remember any changes.

We stayed at OKW in November and absolutely loved it. We bought at VWL through a resale. We bought there because we knew if we went around the holidays, (thanksgiving/x-mas) that VWL is where we would want to be. So we wanted the 11 month window. Because OKW is so large, there would be a good chance that we could get in there without a problem. Yes the dues are a lot less, but the best thing to do is buy where you would want to be the most!

Actually there are quite a few reasons and quite a few things offered at all the other WDW DVC resorts that OKW does not have:
1. Location, Location, Location. All 3 are located in excellent areas. They are Prime real estate and the prices reflect this.
2. You are within walking distance to 2 parks (BCV & BWV) and a boatride away at VWL.
3 All deluxe resort amenities are offered which includes valet parking and room service.
4. Themed main pools with water slides and more importantly life guards.
5. Numerous excellent restaurants within walking distance.
6. Numerouse shops/stores within walking distance. (Boardwalk area and WS)
7. Nighttime entertainment right outside your door.
8. Elevators and indoor hallways
9. A wide selection of very nice lounges for an evening drink for the adults
10. Many villas with views of Illuminations and Fantasmic from your balcony (BCV & BWV)
11. Having a variety of choices of WDW transportation: walking, boat, monorail and bus...

Great post by Deep! We own at BWV and OKW and think (for our situation) we got the best of both worlds. Points go further at OKW and with BWV standard view. We get the spread out, condo atmosphere of OKW and the action of BWV. We are off to BWV soon and can't wait! We have been hitting BWV in spring and OKW in the lazy days of late summer. Love it love it love it!

Your situation sounds very similar to ours when we purchased. We liked Old Key West because of the lower maintenance fees. We also liked that the points go a little further at Old Key West and that the rooms are a little larger. Even though Old Key West is our home resort we have stayed at Boardwalk twice and at Villas at Wilderness Lodge. As long as you can be flexible you will be pretty happy.

We also bought through a resale. We paid a little less through the resale. The big bonus was that we got an additional 114 points to use the first year because the seller had banked points. If you take advantage of magical beginnings through Disney you can bring the cost down to $74 per point but you have to give up your first years points. I can't imagine too many people would want to do that.
