Ok here's the question. We are going to a timeshare presentation tonight. We have been to the dvc last August and fell in love with it,but what I have read on here if you aren't going to do disney every year then this isn't a good investment for trading. The place we are going tonight is called global services. Has anyone ever heard of them and if so what do you know about them?I'm trying to see whats the best for our situation.I love the points system compared to a fix week.So if you have any information about global services I could sure use it.

Actually, I would modify that to say:

1) Staying at a DVC resort give you your best value (and remember, there are DVC resorts at Hilton head and Vero Beach).

2) It is usually a good deal if you plan on at least every other year.

3) DVC has very good (excellent) trading power.

On the flip side, DVC is one of the most expensive timeshares available, and you can find good traders for a lot less money.

Anyway..... I'd suggest www.tug2.net for more information about timeshares in general, and checking into the timeshare resale market.

This wouldn't be Cendant Global Services, BV would it? If so, then you are likely dealing with a Fairfield Resort.

We've been to a Fairlfield presentation, and found the sales pitch to be medium pressure.

Fairfield claims to be one of the largest timeshares, so from that perspective, you certainly have lots of options within the Fairfield system. Fairfield also has a points based system (I think all the resorts have converted over by now) similar to DVC but with somewhat more restrictions as I recall (minimum length stays are longer for example).

There are lots of Fairfield resales available, so I would certainly investigate those as a possible option.

I agree that DVC is probably not the best choice as a strictly "trading" timeshare. If you plan on visiting WDW every other year, you might want to think about a 150 point DVC purchase, plus an inexpensive resale to use for trading. I also suggest heading over to www.tug2.net for general timeshare info.

Resales of non-Disney timeshares can be had at amazing deals. Most other timeshares do not have the "Right of first refusal" that Disney has. (Meaning that if you try to sell DVC for too low of a price, Disney retains the right to buy it instead.) This means that many timeshares that will cost $18,000 from the developer can be had for $6,000-$10,000 on the resale market. (You can still get a deals on DVC resales, but the comparison is closer to $18,000 vs $15,000)

I would consider buying directly from Disney (I actually bought an OKW resale), but I don't think I would consider buying a different timeshare from the developer.

BTW, if at your presentation they use the "You have to buy today, because this deal will never be available again." line, then:

1. Don't believe it.
2. Ask them the following: "So are you saying that you have so little confidence in your product that you are afraid that everyone will say no if you let them think about it for a little while?"

I would second the TUG recommendation. No way I'd buy any timeshare from the developer other than maybe DVC. I'd say whether DVC is a good value for you depends on your circumstances. I'd not want to use it much for trading but if you can use 150 points up going less than every year, I'd still seriously consider it. I'm not sure about global services but would suspect it's either Fairfield or RCI which now owns Fairfield. There are other points systems out there and cheaper ways into RCI points system if that's way you want. Good luck.

One other point to remember. If you go to any other timeshare presentation and they tell you that you can easily exchange for a DVC timeshare, then don't believe it.

Trading INTO DVC is extremely difficult, and it is impossible with lower valued resorts. (Such as fairfield, etc).

Only the highest valued resorts in prime times have any shot at all of trading for Disney DVC. Even then those people often wind up trading down. For example they have a 2-B/R Marriott resort that they can trade, but only get a 1-B/R DVC resort.

I remember one post where someone (possibly Marriott?) tried for two years to get into a DVC resort and couldn't.

If you want to be able to go to a DVC resort, your only truly safe bet is to buy at DVC.

Yes, you CAN trade INTO DVC in theory, but in practice, not really. The ony way you can trade in is if someone in DVC trades out, which is rare.

There have been some past threads on this point. If search is working you might try looking around.

ok we went see the global services it's not a fairfield property. It is a travel agency membeship. You can purchase 4 weeks, and then they book you at whatever resorts are in there data base.It cost you 49.00 to book and there is a yearly fee of 349.00So if you ever use all 4 weeks it would be over 500. a year.I have a problem with not knowing where i might be staying. All of the resorts are rci"or ii.Needless to say we didn't buy.Since my heart is with disney. But we did get some good freebies.

Run, run away very fast. Do not join this type of deal.

how funny dean.I didn't run just walked.I do however have friends who are members and they just love it.They have never had any problems.I wished them luck with and told them that I'm going to stick with Disney.

Leslie,
This strikes me as one of those too good to be true deals. I have friends who did something simular and could only get poor weeks at resorts they did not want to go to. Getting out of the deal was a MESS! (It seems like you had to sign up for forever!)

I agree with Dean that if you are looking for a non-Disney resort go resale! With Disney it just depends. However, I will say that one of the reasons I did do Disney was the fact that thier Right Of First Refusal keeps the resale prices much higher than the industry average.

Well we looked at disney in the summer and thats where I want to be so does the daughter. So all i need to do is talk hubbt into it.So far my friends haven't had any trouble getting what they want.I just didn't feel comfortable with it.I just want my disney.
