I changed a DVC reservation last week and got a new confirmation letter - in the letter was the standard note about trip insurance, but there was ALSO a flyer that explained the details:

Plan 1 - Vacation Point coverage Limits
Travel delay ($100 max per day) $300
Baggage & Travel Documents $500
Baggage Delay $100

Points:
$5 times number of points for reservation

Cost for Plan 1 - Points times $5 times 5%
150 points X $5 - $750
$750 X 5$ = $3750
Minimum premium amount is $29

Plan 2 - Airline ticket coverage Limits
Trip cancellation and Interruption
(max of $400/person) Cost of airfare
Travel Delay ($100 max per day) $300
Baggage & Travel Documents $500
Baggage Delay $100
Cost $29/person

Plan 3 - there is no plan 3 (no seriously!)

Plan 4 - Medical Coverage Limits
Medical Expense $25,000
Emergency Med. Transport $30,000
Emergency Family Travel arrangements $3,000
Accidental Death & Dismemberment $25,000
Travel Guard Assistance (?) included

Cost = $3.55/person/day

Hope this helps everyone!!

I think the premium under plan 1 is 5% of the total insurance.
So $750 x 5% = $37.50 for 150 points.

So after you pay the premium, you would only actually be getting $4.75 a point back. Doesn't seem worth it unless you are close to the end of your use year or if it's questionable if you will be going. I've never looked into this particular insurance, but watch for exclusions. I've seen other travel insurance that will exclude pre-existing conditions. Some will waive that if you apply within 7 days of initial reservation.

I think that the above statement assumes that the DVC will restore your points, if something happens.
While they have a good track record for doing this, it is out of kindness (and good customer relations) that they do this, not something that they are obligated to do.
Of course, their track record of doing this, makes it more likely that I will travel during a time where there is an increased risk of something happening.

My statement assumed that you would be able to rent points for more than $4.75, even holding account points. I would not count on DVC restoring points, except in cases like hurricanes or terrorist attacks, even then you can't count on it 100%.

The premium recently increased to 5.15% (minimum $29).
