DVC studios - fewer amenities

And in truth, it wouldn't be overly expensive to add the dishwashers at OKW, they'd simply need to install one in the maids' supply rooms to every 3rd or 4th building or so. And buy enough glasses and cups to do the switchouts, and since the rooms are not serviced daily, they wouldn't need a lot of switch out inventory.

I sent member services my objection to this policy. My main concern with this new policy is the environmental impact it will have getting rid of all those Styrofoam cups. If anyone is curious here is a PowerPoint presentation that reviews the life cycle of Styrofoam from San Francisco State University. :sad2:

If they are really that concerned about dishwashering facilities they could put one in each of the studios too. They make those 1/2 sized dishwashers, they should fit there under the counter. How much can they cost in bulk about 200.00 a unit spread out over what, about 100000 members now? That would be a dollar or two per member. Much cheaper than buying 60 cups per room, per stay.

It has no bearing on if your a new member or old one .

It is just a way for somepoeple to bash DVC for doing something right.

Just like the thread here on DVC and Disney has the dirtest rooms.

I agree with this 29 pages on Glasses and Cups I wonder what will happen when the announce that Kingdow towers will not happen.

This is NOT DVC doing something right! It is wrong on so many levels, but some people just can't see the forest for the trees.

By replacing the mugs and glassware with plastic and paper, more trash is created. BAD for the environment and smacks of hypocrisy from a company that prides itself on being environmentally friendly. Providing reusable cups and mugs (and I feel there should be real dishes too, but that's a different thread altogether and we weren't led to believe that when we bought in) is much more environmentally friendly. I can just see the litter around the resorts now. People don't tend to take their ceramic coffee mug out of the room on the way to the parks, but I bet they start taking those styrofoam cups with them. Not only that, but the cost to constantly replace them will be passed onto us as owner/members. Anyone remember the old adage, "do as I say, not as I do"??? Must be DVC's new motto.

So what if there are no dishwashers in a studio unit. For hundreds, dare I say thousands, of years, people washed dishes by hand. There is nothing wrong with this. If Disney can't get their employees to do their jobs correctly between ressies, that's a problem they should address on that end, not by punishing those of us who bought into their vacation home away from homes. Maybe Disney should do like other hotels and swap out all glassware in the studios between ressies and take them to a commercial dishwashing area. That's what many other DELUXE hotels/resorts do. Heck, even some of the less expensive hotels/resorts do this. There isn't even an issue of cups being washed by housekeeping incorrectly, because their system is much more sanitary to begin with.

It also creates a class system within the DVC resorts that should not exist. DVC units are deluxe units. PERIOD. End of story. It shouldn't matter if you're in a studio or larger unit. Paper and styrofoam are for value accommodations, not deluxe. Say what you will about studios being the bottom of the barrel, but if I'm getting bottom-of-the-barrel amenities, I'd better be paying bottom-of-the-barrel prices and not what Disney charges to stay in a DVC studio.

Companies looking to save a dollar here or there always take away the little things because they think that people won't notice or won't care enough to complain. The problem is that when enough little things are taken away, it becomes a BIG thing and people do start to notice. For many of us, this is the "straw that broke the camel's back," and "we're mad as H-E-double-hockey sticks and just not going to take it any more."

I love Disney and have enjoyed my DVC membership/ownership for many years. However, I really am beginning to rethink the whole thing. My Disney vacation home is quickly becoming a high-priced, low-class neighborhood.:sad2:

Good posts, great points.

Why dont we all do the neighborly thing and for those that are in a 1 bed or larger, share with thy neighbor and offer them some glassware:flower3:

It's not stealing, they are just borrowing a mug of sugar:rotfl:

Maybe we can put a lime green Mickey from Home Depot on our door to show support for "each one mug one":hippie:

Please, please write and complain. We have to stop this push to do things with no consideration of what the membership wants. This has Jim Lewis written all over it.

I wonder if it would be beneficial to complain outside of the DVC. You know up higher in the food change. Who does Jim Lewis report to? Maybe they need to start getting a ton of emails too? Someone in the Disney organization has to care about how the magic of a Disney Resort stay is being devaluated. Disney rents these studios out for cash too, and sometimes people who stay in Deluxe resorts stay at a DVC property. How will someone who doesn't know what the DVC used to be like goes there and compares it to another deluxe's level of ammenities?

Ultimately, this is a poorly considered plan. I agree with those who suspect that it is a direct result of the housekeeping 'exposes'. A decision was made to remove glassware and mugs from those units with no in unit dishwasher, while no consideration was made for the impact on Housekeeping (repeated calls for replacements), guest satisfaction, or Mother Nature.

There are other solutions; hotels, resorts and timeshares around the world deal with this on a daily basis, and not in the reactive manner which DVC has chosen to implement this.

Should this continue for more than a few months, my faith in DVC and WDW as a resort operator will be sorely lacking.

I think that is part of the problem, I think Jim only answers to Al Weiss and Eiger. But I think someone needs to listen.

I guarantee you they did not take the glassware out of the deluxe resorts.

Why not send a message to the Vice President for Disney Corporate Environmental Policy?

Here is the 2006 Annual Environmental Report http://corporate.disney.go.com/environmentality/enviroport/2006/mf/lfk.html
As we look to 2007 and beyond, we will continue to take significant, positive steps on behalf of our business and the environment
Apparently 'beyond' was not a very long moment in time!

This is bad. It is a downgrade of ammenity. It is a deluxe ammenity. Treat it as such. I don't care if WDW removes mugs from their resorts. DVC paid for them and should have them.
I want mine! You can quote rules and bylaws all you want, but if I'm not satisfied, I will sell. Search DEB & BILL. This is an owners club and changes are only needed to suit the owners!

I've been hoping you would join this discussion. The warnings you have posted in the recent past about DVC upper management focusing on expanding the membership but ignoring the existing members have been echoing in my head since this news broke.

I am not at all sure how this all relates to being more sanitary? There are so many posts on these boards about the routines people go through when they get to their villas. Some do nothing, some practically clean the entire place again. Now there will be more unwrapped styrofoam cups/plastic cups sitting on the cabinet shelves that haven't been "sanitized for your protection".

They can't really be washed even if we did still have dish soap and a sponge. They won't have been taken out of their sleeves by a food service worker but put out by someone who may have just cleaned...well.....

If it appears the last people didn't use them will they be removed and new brought in? How would you know?

Perhaps it's just me but seems this is less sanitary than a mug/glass that you can wash if you feel so inclined.

You gonna search me?? :magnify:

Exactly!

He is such a fake and the worst thing that ever happened to DVC:headache:

He has continually sold the membership out on every turn. If he had not ruined the Members Cruise, I would go just to boo him off the stage. If anyone thinks this is a good change, then that is just scary. :scared1:

Matter of fact, those that are going should chant "we want mugs" at his member meeting.

This was my reaction as well when I saw photos that someone posted of the Styrofoam cups sitting on the shelf in their kitchenette. Is that shelf where the lip of the bottom cup is resting clean? How long have those cups been there? Did mousekeeping touch the rims of those cups when placing them on the shelf? Were his/her hands clean when doing so? I agree with you -- I would MUCH rather have real glasses and cups that I can wash before I use them. Otherwise, if they are going to put disposables in the studios then they should be wrapped, but that just generates more waste.

Geeez that would not happen :rolleyes1

There is a member here who told a persons to sue after a fall would not say they got the poops from improper washing of there own dishes:confused3

Lmao now that is a hoot

Excuse me . . . what?

Naa they would have had someone else to feed them.

Once a negitive feeling goes it grows like wild fire here

Have too post this again in case someone missed it..

Disney Vacation Club spokesperson Diane Hancock confirmed for AllEars® that the studio villas no longer have glassware or ceramic mugs for use and have now switched to disposables. "Because dishwashing equipment is not available in the studios, we feel this is the best option for our members and guests," said Hancock. And without the glassware, dishwashing soap will no longer be provided for the Studios. This change does not affect the one-, two- and three-bedroom villas.

Wow! and to think I grew up in a 900 square foot house with one bathroom, one kitchen and NO DISHWASHER and I lived to tell about it at the ripe age of 50! I guess I don't remember but we must have used paper plates and cups all those years .. . . . since we had no way to wash real plates, cups and glasses . . . . .
