I had been to a Vistana presentation years ago and that so turned me off to timeshares that I wouldn't go near a
DVC booth.
I knew next to nothing about DVC and in December of 2003 I thought it was still that one resort over there ... something about Key West.
We had taken a boat to Boardwalk, not realizing it was DVC but I saw the Welcome Home sign and figured "Oh, they must have timeshares here too". We were wandering around and walked past the DVC kiosk. It was unmanned at the momen, the rep had stepped away for a second, so I took the opportunity to start looking through the material. I was very surprised. I didn't know about the other DVC resorts. I didn't know about trading out or the fact that it wasn't a fixed week etc. etc.
Suddenly the rep walked up to the booth and asked if he could help us. I probably looked like a deer caught in the headlights. I screamed "NO" and took off (timesharaphobia strikes again). He said no problem if you want to keep looking, I'll just wait over here and he walked away. I got my courage up and went back and kept looking through. He was a clever gent and he inched his way back to the kiosk and asked us if we wanted to speak to someone about it. I was taken off guard and actually said yes.
Well at that point, the sales center was still at Boardwalk, next thing I know we're walking a few feet to the center and he's asking if a guide is available. We're told to have a seat and someone will be with us shortly. It was a nice place, nice furnishings. Danish, juice etc. available. I wanted to run.
A few minutes later our guide to be came out and introduced herself. She took us back and spent quite a bit of time with us explaining the program, answering questions. It was actually a pleasant experience and completely pressure free. We did get the offer only good for 3 days bit but we were not pressured to sign on the spot. I actually think that we would have had to argue with her if we had wanted to sign then and there. It was very much presented to us to take the materials, look them over, think about it and then come back and sign if we were interested.
She setup an appointment for us to return, but made it quite clear that we were free to cancel. She just requested that we call to let them know so that she wouldn't sit around waiting. She arranged for a van to pick us up and our resort for the appointment.
We left with a bag of literature and soon found that we were about to join a cult. We had several people stop us throughout WDW and ask us if we were looking at buying. They went on and on about how wonderful it was and we wouldn't regret it.
Two days later it was time for the appointment. A few hours ahead of time the van driver called to verify that we still wanted to be picked up. No pressure, we could have easily said now. But we were ready to sign. So we kept the appointment and haven't regretted it since.
