For some interesting information and another DVC rumor...

Very interesting, indeed. Thanks for posting the link, Doc.

Thanks for the link Doc! That was very interesting!

They mention building a new DVC at Disneyland Resort. Now, I haven't been to Disneyland since before they broke gound on California Adventure. Does anyone who has been out there recently know if there is still enough land around the Resort where they could build a DVC resort. That would be really nice if they did. Thanks for the link, Doc.

Thanks, DOC:) . Of course, when it comes to DVC expansion OUTSIDE of WDW, "SEEING IS BELIEVING!!!!!!!

The article at Timesharebeat.com is largely "borrowed" from an article I wrote about a year ago. My article is at http://www.yesterland.com/ncv.html

Let's compare:
Quotation from my article:
Following the success of the original Disney Vacation Club (now named Disney's Old Key West Resort) at Walt Disney World, Disney was positioning itself to be a major player in the timeshare business. Prior to announcing the Newport Coast DVC project, Disney announced plans for Vero Beach, Florida, and Hilton Head, South Carolina. Reports said Disney had acquired land at Beaver Creek in Colorado. And the August 1995 issue of Wired magazine featured an article about Times Square in New York City. According to the article, "A key corporate player is the Walt Disney Company, future tenant of a 47-story hotel being developed by Dream Team Associates." The accompanying artwork showed a tower prominently displaying the Disney Vacation Club logo.

Quotation from Timesharebeat article:
Following their success with the original Disney Vacation Club (now named Disney's Old Key West Resort) at Walt Disney World, Disney announced plans for Vero Beach, Florida, and Hilton Head, South Carolina --and also plans for a Newport Coast, California project. Reports around that time also said Disney had acquired land at Beaver Creek in Colorado and in the Branson, Missouri area.

In addition, according to the August 1995 issue of Wired magazine, featuring an article about Times Square in New York City, "A key corporate player is the Walt Disney Company, future tenant of a 47-story hotel being developed by Dream Team Associates." Prominent in the accompanying artwork was a tower displaying the Disney Vacation Club logo.
(No, they didn't contact me, nor did they cite Yesterland as their primary source.)

Of course, the big "rumor" in the Timesharebeat article is:
<DL><DD>"Meanwhile, with the recent expansion of Disneyland and more expansion planned for the future, rumors have begun to circulate again that Disney will finally build its own Vacation Club-- but this time right on the theme park grounds along with its hotels."</DD></DL>
Where are these rumors circulating? Given how little land Disney has at the Disneyland Resort (and how expensive and valuable that land is), building a Disney Vacation Club there would pose economic challenges. Does anyone think the author of the Timesharebeat article really has any information about a DVC resort in Anaheim? Or is the author just reporting the wishes posted on this board for such a DVC location ?

I knew I read "this" article before; I was very confused about the May 6, 2002 dateline and the feelings of deja vu. Thanks for explaining it!

Your article came up when I was researching a DVC purchase or Marriott. I have happily choose DVC:).

Own at OKW, BWV and most recently at BCV......but bought at Marriott Newport Beach last year during a stay there and also after a week at the Grand California on DVC points. The location is just wondeful, the ocean views beautiful and we think DVC missed the boat on this one. We will stay in this beautiful location and drive 30 minutes to Disneyland and CAlifornia Adventure next Summer. If any of you want to try this location just e-mail me at doconnor@niagaramajestic.com and I will get the marriott incentive stay for you....try it, but don't let me say that I didn't warn you.....and you sign! (Hope Disney cruise ends up with the 3rd ship out of LA so we can do that too. :smooth:

I agree.

Even if DVD were to build a DVC resort at the Disneyland Resort, I'd rather spend a week at Marriott's Newport Coast Villas than at an Anaheim DVC. There's so much going on around Newport and Laguna -- including wonderful restaurants, art galleries, places to walk, beaches, recreational facilities, performing arts, shopping, and just sitting on the balcony at Newport Coast, looking out at the Pacific, and sipping a glass of wine.

Disneyland makes a good day trip while staying at Newport Coast. But to me, the Newport Coast area, not the Disneyland Resort, is the destination of choice in Southern Califormia.

yes werner. we saw all this a couple years ago .. right?? Its like deja vu............ right????????????? dave

Niagara2,
My wife and I may be interested, since we have never been to the West Coast and Disneyland. What airport do you usually fly into? May be interested for March 2003. Thanks.

I was wondering about that Werner.

The best airport would be Orange County. The Newport area is lots of fun. Disneyland always seems so small to me after WDW.

I agree also. Disney blew it with this one. I used to live out there and the area around Disneyland is traffic, cheap motels, more traffic and no ambience. Newport Beach/Laguna area would have been beautiful. When I go I stay at the Irvine Marriott hotel near John Wayne airport or Le Meridien close by (is it still open?) DW and I stayed at the Disneyland Hotel complex and it is nice, but to spend a week there? Not in a hotel room! We're too spoiled!

I sent an email to the editor of the Timeshare Beat pointing out the similarities between their article and Werner's (and the fact that some passages were copied verbatim) and wondering how they could copyright an article which seemed to be partially lifted from another source. Here's the reply I received:

That is an original article that was compiled from information that was
submitted to us plus additional research on our part. I just read the
other story that you sent and although there appears to be some basic
similarities, nonetheless, they are separate and distinct works.

I sent back a reply indicating that although there was some additional information which was not present in Werner's it wasn't enough to justify calling theirs "distinct". Personally, I have to question the journalistic integrity of a publisher who appears to condone the sort of behaviour they appear to be guilty of.

But it was an interesting read. :)

We flew info LA as the price was right. It was about an hour away and LA traffic is no treat. The price was very good though. John Wayne Orange County airport is less than 10 minutes away and very user friendly. Next time, live and learn, we will spend a few more dollars and use Orange County. Also - Southwest flies into Orange County so I am sure deals are to be had. You pass Orange County airport on the way to Disneyland which is about 25 minutes away.
We also drove to Carlsburg, about an hour south and did Legoland. It is great for kids under nine. Hugh park, new and clean. Alot to see and do.
Newport Beach and Laguna Beach are so beautiful!

sgtdisney- Disney does have more land adjacent to the current resort. Currently, its earmarked for the third gate, though I'm sure the DCA situation has pushed those plans back a bit.

I am not sure if they own any other undeveloped land.

One thing they could do is condense their parking by converting one of the current lots into a garage (they've already done this with one section).

The issue of course, as Werner alluded to, is what is the best use for their land? Theme park? Probably at some point. DD expansion? Again, probably. DVC? Maybe. I know my family would be all over it, be I don't know if there would be enough others.

Thanks for the info, Raidermatt. I thought that Disney had some more land available around Disneyland, but as you say, what is the best use of it. I am anxious to go out to Anaheim one of these days. The last time I was there, California Adventure was the parking lot. I can't imagine what it must look like know. Well, I can imagine, I have seen pics.. ;) I do remember though, going to Disneyland when I was young and they had the garden rooms and only one tower. Ah memories. It certainly will be interesting to see what else Disney does out there.
