DVC renting points, explain please

Can someone please explain to m the advantages of renting points from a DVC member. And also how it works. I might be interested in trying this for our visit in 2007.

Simply put it is paying a DVc member for use of their points to make a reservation instead of paying cash for a room in WDW. The price is usually between $7-10 per point.

You contact a DVC member willing to make a reservation for you under your name for the dates you want to go, they will then tell you the corresponding points usage and you pay the member directly. The only catch is that this requires quite a bit of trust between you and the DVC member. I suggest reading some of the topics in the DVC forum to better understand risks involved...

him a deposit(once I received the confirmation in the mail) and I just mailed
the balance. He also made my ressie for the DME(transportation). We're going
Dec. 11-15, which is a Mon-Fri. This costs 108 points/$10 pt. The cost of
renting a 2BR villa through Disney is $550/night. So I'm saving approx. $1,000
going this route. I can see myself doing this again. It's been so easy. The
DVC member basically acts as your travel agent and all you do is give the info.

I am going to look into this for our trip next year. Can you tell me, is this usually something that is planned far in advance or more of a last minute find? Can you be on the DDP with this? And I would assume when you say DME, that is from the airport to hotel, and back... like a MEARS?

I made the ressie in August for this coming December. I went on the DVC
Disboards and clicked on "Rent/Transfer Points". They're all listed there.
Some of the points expire and if you can be flexible, sometimes those points
are rented for less for that reason. The DME is the ground transportation just
like Mears only it's FREE. Awesome. To find out more about that, go to the
"Transportation" board. You'll find out all you need to know. There's nothing
these boards don't cover. It's pretty amazing. Good luck with it!

I did it fairly quickly. Nabbed an early November reservation in August. In my case it was during a very popular time, and the DVC member already had the reservation that he couldn't use. That worked out well, as the resorts were booked for this time frame. You can rent just points, and have the member make a reservation if your time frame is wider. Make sense?

Yes, but the DVC member has to make those reservations for you.

I second that you should read all you can on the DVC boards before making your plans. An informed decision is always a better one. Look into your renter, as most are fabulous and honest, but it is a matter of trust.

Please do take this advice. There is a thread now on the DVC forum with a rental situation(s) that did not work out well. Renting can be a great deal for both parties, but you must be cautious and there is a great deal of trust involved. Almost every DVC member will require payment in full 30 days prior to your trip due to the DVC cancellation restrictions, but the member will be in full control of your reservation until you check in. I considered renting points many times prior to purchasing into DVC, but I just could not get comfortable enough with the process, and that was back in the days when non-members could contact Member Services themselves to verify the reservation. Now, only the member can contact Member Services, so all you will have is the written confirmation the member receives upon making the reservation and the honesty of the member from whom you are renting to rely upon.

If you do decide to rent, I am sure there are some wonderful members from whom you can do so. But please approach this as a business transaction and take the normal precautions.

Whatever you do, don't be in a rush to nab one without informing yourself about the process and the person you're renting from.

Although there were a few offers on the board that might have met my needs, I decided to deal with a DVC member who had a high post count, and I read some of the posts to get a feel for the person.

That's not to say that a person with a small post count isn't legit, I just needed the comfort level of knowing that this person had been around awhile and had a good reputation on this Dis.

There were a few offerings that would have cost me less financially, but I paid more for the comfort level I needed to do this. (As well as the fact that it was a confirmed reservation.) He also happened to live relatively close (next state over, I'm not far from border). I felt better knowing I could hunt him down more easily!

Once contact was made, I used the internet to check out his name, address, phone number, etc. to make sure that was also legit/the same. He had a contract, a reservation number, etc. I paid by check. Just use your head and do whatever it takes to increase your comfort level with that person. If something feels odd, than don't do it.

We rented points for the BWV last November for May 06 and everything went so smoothly.... Now I am spoiled!!! I have a great person that I found on these boards to rent from.

I even got too meet her since they were there the same week as well.

So I am very comfortable with the process...We have rented again for December at OKW for 2 nights before our cruise. I did that in August through the same DVC member.

we e-mail each other all the time. For our May trip Iwas able to call Member service and set up DME and that was nice, but now I can not??? She has to take care of everything of this December trip. She sent the official confirmation and then I will give her our flight info.

We rented points at BCV from a great guy we found online. Everything went great. He didn't require any money up front, in fact we continued to contact him to find out when he wanted payment. We had a confirmation from WDW before any payment was made. We set this up in July for our trip at the end of Sept. Again, just read everything you can about doing this first.
