Thax Op for asking all this info! I too I am interested in renting points for our Oct '11 stay at BC. We are considering buying a DVC and thought we would try it out first.

Just wanted to mention that if you are interested in Oct. 11 at BCV, then you need to find a renter very soon. BCV during F&W is near impossible to get into unless you are an owner, so you need to find a BCV owner who will book your reservation this November to secure you a spot. I'm a BWV owner and I purchased this contract to secure a spot at the 11 month window for BWV during October. You should head over to the DVC boards now to start looking. I will be booking my Oct. 11 reservation in November 2010. Good luck.

I've rented in the past,I love staying DVC- it's a Disney hotel, only a bit better/roomier/with a mini kitchen and balcony!
I like the idea of 'Dave' who runs that point rental co on that board, if you're worried about trust, etc that's the easiest way to do it...otherwise you could potentially be taking quite a risk, and have no recourse later.
When I did it (twice) the person renting was very nice, and the process was very clear, and honest (paypal) but I was already familiar with DVC....

lots of good info!

Is there anywhere on the Dis where people post comments about renters/who they rented points from? Would be nice to hear good feedback about a poster/renter, which may take the "fear of the unknown" away.......

Once you pay your money, and the person you're renting from gives you the reservation #, you should be safe though--right??

thanks

The risk is that after the DVC member makes the reservation and takes your money, they can cancel the reservation and disappear with your money. That's why it is so important to find an owner that you trust.

The points you see for $9 are usually about to expire, so the owner is looking at "use them or lose them". If you want to travel during the dates those points are valid then it can be a terrific deal.

We never have any points left over to offer for rent, so I don't have any personal experience with that. :)

I think it depends on when during F & W you are going. We are OKW owners. Last year we were able to get BCV at the end of October & this year we were able to BWV.

To be fair, we were wait listed for BWV but it did come through about a month ago. Going end of October again.

Is it any safer to do a point transfer? I have a friend who is a member who would make the reservation for me.

...
Are there any differences between the $9 and $13 points?? If not---is the ticket just to jump on the cheaper points when they are posted??
...

Most of the times the difference is the points expiration dates or limitations.

If the points will expire really soon then the owner would be more inclined to reduce their price. That means you as a possible renter would be limited to what is available for those months prior to expiry dates.

Some owners have points that have been classified into "reservation" points and have limited usage to OUTSIDE of DVC resorts. So they would reduce the price/pt as well since outside of dvc resorts have high points requirement/night.

And some of the times it's purely supply vs. demand situation where the owner just wants to get some $ and willing to cut the price to get the points sold fast.

So you never know until your read their posts on the limitations of their points usage.

The good thing about using David would be that he has a large pool or owners to choose points from which means you most likely will get your first choice. And you deal with a more "professional" business person, so your $ is "safer" in some sense.

I'm an owner as well and have rented out points previously with thank goodness no problems. My renters have repeatedly referred me and asked me every now and then if I have any points available for rent. Unfortunately for them I have none

So I guess what I'm trying to say is there are good owners out there to rent from. You just have to do your research.

Read the sticky on the DVC rent/trade board and follow through with the suggestions (use contract, contact owners prior to sending $, check their post counts, and use your instict!!!). You'll be able to save $2-$3/pt by doing so.

And once you find a good owner to rent, keep in touch. So you will have someone you can trust in case you need to rent again in the future.

...
Also......the DVC resorts. Are they very close to the "actual" resorts? Do they share the same pools, etc?
...

They are sometimes attached to the regular resorts (BW, BC, AK Jambo) or next door (AK kidani, WL, BLT) or stand alone (SSR, OKW). Their pools would be the same as regular resort if they are attached or separate if they are next door or stand alone.

Remember DVC units do not have daily mousekeeping. Trash/towel on the 4th day and complete clean on the 7th day.

Good luck doing your research!

I think it is.
Your risk would be at the point of $ and point transfer. After that since you trust your friend with your reservation you would be safer that way.

As a DVC member that has rented in the past, I recommend really doing your homework and reading the FAQ post. I've had nothing but great rental processes, but I think that you just need to go with your gut. When I'm making reservations for renters, I made sure that I give my email address, home phone and address. I want the renter to feel comfortable with the process. Yes, it does take some trust, but if your owner has been around the boards for a while, it makes the process a bit easier.

Also, one word of advice. Keep your options open. If you're interested in a specific resort, make sure that you're asking VERY early. I had so many people that requested specific resorts, but they were only asking a couple of months out (and during the holiday periods). So, of course, their options were limited to just a few resorts.

And finally, try to just ask one owner at a time to check on availability. If they don't post back within 12-24 hours, find another owner. The problem is that someone looking to rent asks several owners for availability and all of those owners end up calling Member Services looking for availability and it wastes the owners time if someone already got back to them. It's just frustrating.

Good luck with the rental process!!!
