Hi All. I hope this is the correct forum.

Family is considering renting DVC points for a trip next year. I have a couple questions...

1) Does the '11 month in advance' start on check-in day or check out-day (ie: We want to stay */*-*/*. Can the reservation be made now or do we need to wait until */*--- assuming we find someone with the right home resort)?
2) When renting points, are owners willing to "deal" more so far out (to get the confirmed reservation) or are we better off waiting until closer?
3) How quickly would *** 1bd fill up?:rolleyes1

Thanks in advance.

You may book that reservation with someone that owns points at that resort today.

It is best to book early to insure you will get the accommodations you desire, rather than try to wait for a bette price. The points may (or may not) be cheaper as you get closer to your travel dates, but you may also not find any availability.

I think most owners would be happy to book for you at the 11 month window.

When renting, cheap isn't always the best deal. You sometimes get what you pay for. Read the stickies on the rent/trade board for some helpful hints.

I'd think not.

I don't rent my points, but it seems to me that there are two risky periods for a DVC owner. The obvious one is close to the arrival date, because of the limitations/restrictions/loss of points that can occur with late cancellations.

But the farther out the reservation is, the more chance something can go wrong. Personal or financial situations can change, etc. That's a risk for both the owner and the person renting their points.

So I'd say no to this question. The price might be lower close to the arrival date if the owner had "distressed" points, but I would not think the price would be lower far out from the reservation. If anything, I'd think it would be higher because you'd be using the owner's 11-month booking window.

DIS rules prohibit posting anything that could be construed as an "ad" for renting points on the regular forums, so Chuck had to delete all the relevent info from your original post. Nothing personal -- we just have some very crafty folks here!

No problem. Didn't mean to break any rules. I apologize.

I know what we'd like to pay (and it seems to be reasonable based on the "pts available" thread) but didn't know if the cost goes up/down based on time from vacation.

Thanks for the tips.

For planning purposes, I'd use $10-12 per point.

But price is really not the main consideration in a rental. You need to understand the process, limitations, and potential pitfalls of renting. You need to find out how to find an owner you are willing to trust with your money for several months prior to your arrival. Those things are much more important that a difference in price from one owner to another -- and don't forget that lodging cost is only one part of your overall trip cost.

The place to start that learning experience is the "stickies" on the Rent/Trade board. Read them ALL, including all of the links. Then come back here and ask questions about things you don't understand.

Good luck, and welcome to the DIS!

if you want a better deal, you can get pts for less than $10 that will expire in the next few months.

the downside is that the owner may not be able to find anything at ANY resort, much less your preferred resort and dates.

(not sure if the 1st question was answered but it's 11 months from the check-in date that the owner can call and book up to a 7 nights stay.)

OR seven months from checkin date if the owner is booking at a non-home resort. For example, we own at OKW and SSR and have the 11-month booking at those two resorts. At any other resort, we have to wait until seven months. Depending on resort and dates, that may or may not be a problem.

I am going over the sticky's and understand the trust & due diligence that needs done before making an agreement with a DVC owner. However, that research is hard to do until you find someone willing to rent points. :)

If I understand the rent/trade board rules correctly, only DVC OWNERS can start threads, correct? I shouldn't start a thread saying I'm looking for xxx villas from xx to xx, right?

I've also noticed in the R/T board that most of the posts are people looking to rent points for travel this year. I guess I just need to wait until people start posting points available next year? Or if I see someone say they have points for the resort I want, is it inappropriate to PM them to see if they're willing to rent for next year? I hope that question made sense.

Thanks

If you see an owner with the home resort you want, I don'y see the harm in sending a PM (you'll need a few more posts to activate your PM function) and asking if they'll have points for next year.

Otherwise, you are correct, you can not start a thread asking for points. But can reply into threads that are offering points.

Thanks Chuck. Since this is my 6th post (I've tried to jump in a couple of the non-DVC threads), I'll hopefully be able to PM now.:cool1:

Been to WDW lots of times, just have never done the DVC rental thing.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Sorry guys, one more question (because I don't want to assume)...

If someone advertises '100 pts @ xxx, 100 pts @ yyy, and 50 pts @ zzz', does that mean they have 3 'home' resorts and 250pts total to use? So all 250 can be used for one reservation at zzz and booked 11 months out?

That's my understanding, but I've known to be wrong... once:rotfl:

You are correct that it means they have 3 home resorts, but the points can not be lumped together until the 7 month mark. So if an owner has 100 points at AKV and 100 at OKW, at 11 months AKV can be booked with AKV points only and OKW can be booked with OKW points only. If the owner needs to pool the points together to have enough to make the ressie, they would need to wait until the 7 month mark.
