What is the deal with the DVC and points?
I have been hearing a lot that my family of 7.Me,the hubby and 5 children,16,14,13,12,and 9 would be better off to buy points from owners instead of paying for 2 rooms at the value resorts.I love the values however I would like to have more to do at the hotel of choice.I know many have better transportation as well as bike rentals and such. The thing is I have no idea how this points thing works .where do I get that information and how can I tell if its more affordable for me. How would I find people selling them?Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.Thanks. :confused3

Go over to the Rent/Trade Board under the DVC threads. At the top of the page is a FAQs page to give you the info you need.

Just remember that this is an agreement between you and an individual member. The member controls the reservation at all times until you check in. For a family your size, you would need a two bedroom villa which sleeps 8. There is one king sized bed in the master bedroom. There is one queen sized sleeper sofa in the living room. The second bedroom may contain either two queen sized beds (OKW) or one queen and one double sleeper sofa (all the others). Some of the other DVC resorts do have a second bedroom with two queen sized beds, but they are limited in number and not all resorts have them.

Villas come in lock off and dedicated. Dedicated has only one entrance into the villa and no extra kitchen in the second bedroom. The lockoff can be turned into one-one bedroom and one-studio, so the studio can standalone. There are two entrances into the villa for a lockoff. Both doors will use the same key.

ok I read that and its all very confusing.I have no idea how many points I would need for say a 7night vacation.I'm sorry I look so stupid but this is all so new to me.Any further help would be great. Thanks all. :)

When are you going? Let me know and I'll look on the points chart for you.

But if you want to figure it out before I can get back to you, here's what you do ..

In the DVC sectiion is the points chart. Different times of the year are different points much like hotel rates based on seasons. For instance, a week in a 2 bedroom at BCV or BWV in Jan in 270 points, but much higher at Christmas. Since you are going for 7 nights, you don't have to worry about adding up individual days, just look at the weekely rates.

The points are higher on the weekends, but going for 7 days, you can't avid the weekend unless yoou change resorts. But with 7 people, I don't think I would want to change.

I think a DVC resort would be perfect for you. Having a washer and dryer and full size kitchen will be great!.

At the top of the R/T Board, right under the Timeshare Store logo, there is a link to DVC Points Charts. Click on that and choose the resort you think you want. OKW is the oldest and has the largest rooms.

Hey thank you so much .I don't even know if I could afford this but I figure its well worth looking into.I am thinking of going either May anytime after the 15th.or June when the kids get out of school again. But try for May thats when I would really preferr. My husband only gets a week off so we are only gonna be able to do 6 ngihts 7days sorry about that.I guess I was dreaming out load again.I would like to stay longer but 6 nights will have to do .Thank you so very much for your help .I feel so stupid .

Thanks Deb & Bill got it.

Now when I put in the resort and date and then it goes to points and its written in blue that is the number of points I would need if I stayed at that resort at that time? Now the average person can buy them at around 10 per point depending on the time of year.Have it got this so far becuase I'm still trying to understand how it all works?
Thanks again. :goodvibes

A lot of how much this will cost you depends on how many weekend nights you need (Fri-Sat) as they are over twice the number of points needed for week nights (Sun-Thu). It will probably end up being more money than getting two rooms at a value. But, on the plus side...you would have the full kitchen and a lot more room for everyone. Perhaps the money you save on eating meals in the room will make up for the difference in cost. Also, another thing to consider would be staying at the values for the weekend nights and just renting points for Sun-Thu. It would be quite easy to do if you have a car with you (otherwise Disney will transfer your luggage for you and it might take a bit longer). We could probably help you with this a bit more if you can provide some definite dates. Try to swing it if you can as everyone will benefit from the roominess of a 2 bdrm villa. :goodvibes

 I am a mom of five too :goodvibes ,and like you I am learning the DVC
points too. I will try to tell you what I have learned so far. Like you I need a two-bedroom at the World. I choose Broadwalk Villa or beach Club Villa both of which I need 399 pts according to that calculator thing. So now I know the points I need (which are high because I want christmas 2007) anyway back to knowing. So I start looking high and low over boards for the great wonderful DVC owners which have alot of points for sale and then I pm (private message them) or email them and ask 1. Can they help me with my dates and if their points can be used at my location because if I am understanding right when the DVC owners became members they chose a home resort which could be any of the resort like OKW-Old Key West, BWV-Broadwalk, BCV-Beach Club Villa, SSR-Sarogta Spring Resort etc... 2. I ask how much they want they usually state this though, and then ask how much down and when final payment due. I always include my dates, party size, and
what resort I really want but it the World so I am not picky. I then thank them for the time and ask for them to pm or email me back and they are usually very fast. I hope this help you some, and I hope I am understanding it right oh yeah once you speak with DVC owner they usually call Disney and ask
about our resort and room type and dates see if they are available and then they make reservation and let you know and from what I see usually so much is due upon confirmation of reservation and the rest so many weeks before you leave. Please email if I can help or just like to talk you probably can give me great advice on raising five since yours are older then mine which are 12,10,9,5,2 the first three and baby are all fixing to have b-days so add a year. I would love to have a disney friend. Hope I help and hope to hear from you. :)

Members can book 11 months out at their HOME resort and 7 months out at the other DVC resorts. Nobody can make reservations now for Christmas 2007. However, if you are a member and need points, members can transfer points to other members.

Hey glad I could help. Thanks for your imput as well ..I still have no clue how this all works.I have to really take sometime and try to read up on it as much as I can and try to figure out if its something we could afford. We really have no problem staying at the values ,sure it would be nice to try something else but you can only do what the pocket will allow you know.Anyway I would be happy to share with you any advice on the 5 children situation. What do you have girls or boys and few of each .I have 4 girls ,1 boys and he is dead center.Ok well we will talk again soon and thanks for all the help.

Ok, Tinks mom ... here's what I get..

May 1-June 10 is one rate and after June 11, the points per night needed goes up. Also, depending on if your 6 days included 2 weekend nights or one weeknd night, things will change. The cheapest option is to stay one weekend night before June 10. (I didn't quote a standard view at BWV as they are hard to get.)

Some info ... You may not be able to get the points for 10 bucks each. Some people are renting for more. You can look on the rent board to get an idea. People are able to make reservations at 11 months out. So, for a May or June stay, they can already be made. You may want to make a decision asap to get your first choice.

With your family, I think this would be great. You can put your girls in the 2nd bedroom and your son can take the sleeper sofa in the living room. You can fill the fridge with soda, water and snacks and save a bunch! Also, when renting points there is no tax. That is a nice savings right there!

Hope this helps! :goodvibes

Ok you all are going to want to kill me but is there anyway of getting a rough idea what kind of money we are talking about.I would stay Sunday thru Thursday ,leaving on a friday morning. My husband gets vacation after May 1st so whatever is the cheapest would be fine.Ok well once more thank you all for all your help. :thumbsup2

OKW - for 5 nights Sun-thurs (leaving on Friday) 135 points - at $10 a point - $1,350. from May 1 - june 10

value resort rents for $99 a night so $1,114 (with tax at 12.5% pop for 2 rooms). April 15- May 23.

after May 24 - august 4 - $109 a night so $1,226 at Pop.

with the completely kitchen you should do better with a DVC resort. that say, these places can spoil you and your kids.

no offense to anyone - but you might be better off staying at 2 hotel rooms.

then the kids won't ask on further trips or other places - where is my room.....or expect a 2-bedroom condo where ever you go in the future.

I have always allowed my brother to have a 2-bedroom at OKW for his trips. Now my nephew expects me to pay for him to have a 3-bedroom condo for next year spring break - not on my dime....

PEOPLE I ASSURE YOU I AM NOT A STUPID AS I SEEM.I STOPPED SMOKING 2 DAYS AGO AND MY BRAIN IS FROZEN.LOL/THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP.I HOPE THIS FEELING OF WANTING A CIG AND NOT BEING ABLE TO THINK ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE IS GOING TO GO AWAY SOON THOUGH BECAUSE I SWAIR I CAN'T FOCUS ON ANYTHING ELSE.THANKS AGAIN FOLKS. :thumbsup2
I DO HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION.WHEN I GO TO THE RESORT OF MY CHOICE IT HAS THE SEASONS AND DATES AND THEN THERES A NUMBER SAY ITS 27 SUN -THURS.NOW IS THAT FOR THE WEEK OR JUST PER NIGHT?I WAS ASSUMING IT WAS PER NIGHT BUT FIGURED I'D BETTER ASK. :confused3 THANKS GUYS

Sun-Thur points are usually the same and they are listed per night. Fri and Sat are usually the same and also listed per point. If you look for the week, that is for seven days (whatever 7 in a row you are looking at). But throw a holiday in there like Thanksgiving or Christmas and the Daily points can change just for the day.

Good for you giving up smoking. Your family with thank you. :thumbsup2

It's a tough thing to do but you've been successful so far. Stick with it!!
