DVC questions, may be wrong forum, need help

Hey all, unfortunately this has turned into a scam of sorts by a dvc member from this forum. Mods indicated today I'm not alone. We are on day 2 of our trip here at wdw staying at Pop. Rain has made it tough, having neighbors ck the mail back home for a refund ck daily has made it tougher. Legal pursuits will begin Monday. If I thought stopping by a dvc info booth here would help I would do so. Surely they'd want to know a dvc member is scamming using their property...maybe not. Anyways, a shame I have to deal with while on our first disney trip, but it is what it is. I'll keep you posted as things progress.
Blessings, greyraven40

This is just terrible that a person would do this. I am sorry that there is a scammer and it has happened before. I hope that people keep posting and let others know of their good rental experiences and also let us know the bad so others can beware. How can one really know for sure? IDK, but glad you are still having a good vacation.

There is no way to be 100% sure until you check in. The low prices do come with some risk, even though most go through without a problem.

Our trip is going well. Just finished a long dat at MK. Got to see a day time and night time parade, fireworks, and MK is open late tonight. Not So Scary tomorrow night!

The dvc member in question did text me today that he fell off the radar past few days because he's out of the country, so there is "some" hope. Mod here has been helpful. I'm not giving up hope on all of mankind...just yet!

Staying at Pop has been "fine" but humbling. Not for me, but I can make it work. Our kids are 2 and 5 so hopefully first of many trips. It's such a long bus ride to the parks from Pop. Wow.

Long day tomorrow! Night!

Maybe he really has just been out of the country and you will get your money back, hope so.

:thumbsup2

I'm so sorry...what a bad situation. Hopefully the free dining from Disney will help out, can't control the rain, but still, not a great first trip! Sounds like when you get home it's time to start planning that do-over trip and the refund (I would not give up on that) can be seed money. If you still want to try DVC (wouldn't blame you if you didn't) then maybe try David's where there is more of a checks and balances in place.

Ha, yes oddly I would still do a dvc rental in the future now knowing what to look out for. I'm still a candidate to be a dvc member, skies are bright today! Off to AK!

Just make sure to get several references next time if you decide to go with an owner instead of David's service and maybe talk to them by phone before you decided to work with the person.
I'm glad you're not turned bitter by this experience because there are more good owners than scammy ones. Good luck and have lots of fun there!

Did you get your refund from the owner who rented to you?

Sorry this happened to you! I never even knew you could rent until I had already purchased DVC. It makes me sad that some people would use Disney as a scam. I recently needed to use up some points and made a reservation for someone else. It certainly was easy to do, but there had to be so much trust involved. I hope you get your money back!

No, we did not. Our refund checks were sent to 2 different families (mine and the other family) that booked with this member. He "just doesn't know why" we haven't received the checks yet.
He has a few more days before I send facebook messages to everyone on his friend list politely encouraging them to ask their friend or family member to man up.
One of the DVC info booths here were very polite and helpful as well, more than they had to be. I'm going all angles before I bother my half a dozen attorney friends to start their pursuits.

I am so glad you are in Disney and having a good time. Of course he doesn't know why other than he most likely never sent the check. I feel so bad for you and yet you give everyone hope. I hope you owning a DVC is in your future.

Enjoy the trip and I hope your attorneys enjoy doing good work and having justice prevail. Go get em'.

I am having similar issues with the same person as greyraven (OP). I rented DVC points for a trip which is to be in December. Got the emailed reserv confirmation and sent him a check. Then a couple weeks later the reserv was cancelled. The rentee has not responded to resolve or refund at this time.

I will start a new thread later with more details in case it would help anyone learn from the experience.

I have to say greyraven has a very good attitude about the whole thing while still working to get a resolution. I hope I can retain the same attitude. Just don't want it to color my vacation - I have booked another room. It will be somewhat less carefree due to additional expenses incurred. I have known from the start it is "Buyer (renter) beware" but of course having it actually happen is different.

We have arrived home from our first Disney trip. Aside from the drama for which this thread began we had a pretty good trip. A lot to take in for a first timer. We look forward to going back sooner rather than later.
For those that have PM'ed and asked, we began legal pursuits today with the offending DVC member. It is well worth my trouble and energy to have our money returned. Punitive damages are being considered by our attorney. It may take awhile, but I'm seeing this through.
Mods, feel free to close the thread if it's not in good taste to keep forum members updated as we progress. It should serve as a cautionary tale for DVC members selling points and considering being dishonest AND for prospective renters like myself.
I wouldn't hesitate to rent from a DVC member in the future with all of the checks and balances in place. My only comfort at the beginning of this transaction is that they had been on this forum for some time and rented somewhat frequently.
People fall on hard times these days, but they shouldn't prey on a father providing for his family as he plans their first trip to Disney. Bad, bad idea.

Blessings...

People who prey on others have no feelings and don't care who they get money from. I don't think it was hard times either.

Is there a place on this forum where mods would disclose the identity of problem people? I have rented points before (and will probably need to again). I would hate this to happen.

I am glad you had a vacation at Disney and the weather got better. I truly do pray your attorneys go after this person and bring them to justice. It is so wrong and makes me sick that a they did this to you and others.

DVC is a good program and resale contracts are at a low, if you only want to holiday at Disney. DVC also runs some nice offers and I hope to be seeing you again at Disney where I can welcome home neighbor. Heck, just saying hi would make my day.

You have been so open and thoughtful to keep us informed and we can learn because you have shared this with us.
Thank you so very much and please keep us informed on how it ends.

I believe we are dealing with the same person. Same story as the others. Had a reservation, then cancelled twice. After weeks of ducking our contacts, he said he'd have a refund check in the mail. That was over a week ago, and we haven't heard from him since or received a check.

We have had no luck getting a hold of him. He will not return phone calls, texts, or emails. My husband even tried calling him from a different number -- the guy answered and then hung up as soon as he realized it was us.

We were able to book another room, as our trip isn't until January 2012. At this point, however, we will probably cancel. Without a refund, there's just no way we can still afford to take a trip.

I just don't understand how someone can have so little regard for others. I am shocked to find out how many families have been affected by this. :(

We are planning to take legal action as well.

aaaaaand, that brings it to at least 4 confirmed families he has ripped off.
Good talking to ya bestla. Good luck planning your "revised" trip. We'll be in touch.

greyraven40, thank you so much for sharing your tale of woe with us :thanks: I have rented points successfully several times before but I appreciate your message for caution! I definitely do check for ownership but even then, there is a degree of trust involved by both parties :goodvibes
