DVC question

I have been to WDW twice and plan to go every year. I have a vacation planned for Sept 08. I want to take a tour and I believe that the only thing available is SSR and AKV. What I don't understand is what does it mean if you buy SSR DVC? Does that mean you can only go to SSR? I thought that if you own a DVC that you could use any of the villas, and if that is true why do some people want to wait for CRV and not buy now? I may not be explaining clearly, but if someone understands that would be great. Thanks

There are two factors involved as to where you own. The first and biggest is the availability to book your room at the 11 month window. You can only do this at your home resort (the one you own at). If you do not own points at a different DVC, then you can still stay there but you cannot make your reservations until 7 months out. It may not be as much of a problem at the bigger resorts, but if you want to stay at say, BCV or VWL, then having the advanced booking opportunity is crucial, especially at peak and holiday times. Several people own points at multiple resorts for just this reason. They can book at 11 months at the resort they own but only with the points allocated to that resort. At 7 months, they can combine points from all their resorts.

The second factor is your annual dues. Each resort has a different fee based upon the operating expenses of that resort. Some resorts are lower, such as SSR @$4.12 per point this past year.

That is why I advise to buy where you want to stay. Having the ability to make reservations before the other owners from other DVC resorts is the biggest reason.

You're welcome and welcome to the DVC forums is you haven't posted here before. Feel free to keep asking questions as you may hear multiple answers and sometimes the same answer, only worded different which can help clear up confusion.

I did forget to answer the CRV portion of your question directly. It would be for the ability to book at 11 months since it would be part of a monorail resort and have a view overlooking the Magic Kingdom. Demand is expected to be high and some project a difficulty in getting reservations at the 7-month window.

Thank you again, I do have another question. I heard someone was sent a dream book, and would like to know if that book has more information than the DVD and if I called and asked them to mail it to me would they. I would like to get all the information I can and be prepared for next year. Thanks in advance.

The DVD is nothing more than an infomercial to get the emotions going. The book however, will give you the point charts for each resort, some nice pictures and floorplans for rooms at each resort, along with information on Disney Adventure vacations, Disney Cruises and exchanges. It is worth having, especially as a new member.

You can also buy the other resorts if you decided that is what you want. You just have to be insistent with the guide who you are assigned to. Some of them have shorter terms than SSR and AKV so that may factor into your decision and some of them you may have to wait for until they buy back enough points to fill a contract.
