If you pay part points and part cash, are the same "perks" available that I've been reading about i.e. $200 credit, discount on travel by switching ressies, etc....to apply to the cash part?

For this cruise, we paid points for us, and paid cash for our 8 year old son. Nothing was offered for onboard credit since we used DVC to cover the cost of Passengers 1 and 2.

I guess I'm just glad that we get a little break on the points for rebooking a cruise BUT please keep this in mind, unlike the DCL cash paid cruise, if you make ANY, ANY, ANY changes to the original DVC points paid cruise, you are charged a $75.00 fee -
We made a switch in who was going and told them 10 months prior to the cruise and still we got bit for the $75.00!

I think THAT is the most ridiculous rule they have!!! I certainly can't imagine how much effort it took a person to make that change - YES, if it had been closer to the travel date, say within the 90 day window, then charge, but 10 months out....RIDICULOUS!

I have done all....used all points...part points and part cash....and all cash!! I think it was far more adventageous to pay just cash and to book on board, if you can, for the extra on board credit. Shop around before you make a decision.

The points and cash works out well for us (no hassle of renting). Having the points and dh having limited time off, it really makes sense to use part cash and part points. We do like to have some leftover point for a short stay at WDW after. Whatever makes you comfortable.:D

Every situation is different. In general, cash if far better. Points will usually return about $5-7 pp depending on specifics. If you want a higher cabin or have missed out on much of the early booking discounts, points may be a reasonable alternative. Remember there's more to it than just the price vs points. If you do cash plus points, the full price is due when you book. If the price goes down, you'll only get a refund if the points or contract price to DVC goes down. If you cancel, you have far more restrictions with points. So even at $10 pp, cash is likely far better. I'd rather fool with renting the points than the issues associated with using points. But they are your points to do what you want with.

I tried to book our upcoming April trip with points, but the cruise was "closed out". DVC had booked their allotment of rooms. Even if someone cancelled, they would not get the rooms back into their allotment. As it ws my DD's vacation week, we really wanted to go.

I went onto the rent board & rented some literally in 1 hour for $10 a point. I shopped around & got my best price in cash for this cruise. I saved big bucks over DVC point rental if it was available. The transaction was very easy.

Is the credit onboard your only reason for preferring cash, or are there other factors? Any tips on how or where to shop around?
Thanks!

OK...this is what I have discovered....when I paid cash and points I was paying for myself w/points and 1 adult and child with cash. When I inquired about rebooking onboard, the cash amount that DCL wanted for same category, same time following year (Easter) for all 3 of us was the same that DVC wanted for the adult and child I had paid for when I had used pts for myself after the $200 onboard credit. Plus I had to give DVC $ right away and with DCL I could make payments up until 60 days out. Also if you shop around I have found cheaper prices than DCL offers even w/ onboard credit!

These boards are the best for all information including where to get best price. Hope that helps!

Thank you so much, that was very helpful. From what I have read so far, I am almost certain that my family will want to rebook after our March cruise and I want to go prepared. Totally clueless when I booked this trip (part DVC part cash) and I'm sure it cost me. :)

I tried to book our upcoming April trip with points, but the cruise was "closed out". DVC had booked their allotment of rooms.

I had the same experience. I called, and was told it was sold out. I changed my date and called back, and then, while speaking with the DVC rep, told her my disappointment. She checked and said," No, it's wide open". I ended up getting the date I wanted.

Not sure if it would work for you, but you might try again.

Does anyone know if it's possible to book the points portion through DVC and then the cash through a discount TA?

Anytime you book with a mix of points and cash, you must pay the cash portion in full at time of booking.

Good for you. You were fortunate! But it worked out nicely for me in the end. I agree that it's best to call again to be sure info is correct. Here's what happened to me~When I called the 1st time, the CM I spoke to told me the week I wanted was closed out, but to keep checking back, as if someone cancelled, it will go back into inventory. I asked to be waitlisted, she said not possible. I decided to call back as that didn't sit well with me. The 2nd CM told me the info I got was incorrect. The cruise for the week I wanted was indeed "closed out" & even if someone cancelled, they would not get that space back in their inventory. That didn't make sense, so I asked to be transferred to a Manager. He confirmed the 2nd CM was correct. It has to do with group sales. They get a certain # of cabins per sailing for points. Once they are gone, they are closed out & don't get them back, even if someone cancels. We both agreed it didn't make sense, as if you have a willing customer & there is available inventory, it makes sense to sell it- no matter the payment method. In our case, DCL would have made more money having us book with DVC points, as the contract rate DVC pays was higher than the cash ressie I made

It worked out well for us in the end, as we paid far less with a cash ressie, even booking 3 months out- than we would of with booking w/ points. The points I rented covered the ressie, hotel night before, limo to/from Port- far less than what the cruise would have cost with points. We decided to stay a few extra days after on the points we saved paying cash.

Verandah man is correct, but I'll phrase it another way. Any time you pay with a combination of points and cash, you must do it thru DVC AND at the time of the original booking.....so, no, you cannot do some on points and some on cash thru a discount agent.

You really might want to look into renting out your points and booking the whole thing on the cash you get from renting the points. It's usually a better deal.

We used points for DH and me and cash for our DSs.

I agree with what another person posted-this is what we bought the points for!!

Since our family needs 2 rooms to accomodate us, can 1 be booked totally on points and the other thru a separate (non DVC) cash process?

Of course. I'm not sure the process for getting them linked so you can have them close together.
