DVC owners: Is renting points from another owner or swapping too risky?

I wouldn't say renting is "too risky". I rented before buying in, and have used VRBO elsewhere. But I don't want to rent anymore.

That's a big reson to buy into DVC. If renting weren't a hassle and you knew you could always find someone to rent from when you needed, there's little incentive to buy.

While I've rented very successfully twice, I'm the first to admit that I only rented to them because I felt totally comfortable with the people I rented to - even though they were total strangers on the "Rent/Trade" Board.

I think the secret to successful renting is establishing mutual trust so no one loses any sleep! If your not comfortable with the party you're dealing with, then you're better off looking for someone else to rent (or exchange home reservations) with.
