DVC or Wyndham

you can buy most of the timeshares for close to $0 resale

I own both, as a matter of fact, and I am using both this summer for my vacation. We have a week at Daytona Ocean Walk (which we LOVE) and a 5-nighter at SSR (which we LOVE).

Worldmark cost me very little, and allows me enough flexibility to go different places in 2-bedrooms. Disney cost me quite a bit more (understatement), and allows me to do at least 2 5-nighters a year, plus a long weekend in a studio if I use points carefully. I ONLY use Disney at Disney. I did trade Worldmark into BWV once before I owned DVC.

I wouldn't say one was better---they are very different systems, and I believe we have found a way to use both efficiently. Since you really can pick up Worldmark for very little...consider doing it my way and own both!! :cloud9:

Is Wyndham better than DVC in any way?
Hey, nickspace -- which Wyndham are you referring to? Wyndham Vacation Ownership, Worldmark by Wyndham or something else ...?

Like PattiPB, we also own Worldmark and are thrilled with our ownership. In fact, we are staying at the Worldmark Dolphins Cove tonight on "Bonus Time" to attend a D23 event at the Disneyland Resort. Good times!

Only a minus for Wyndham owners who paid $$$$ from developer and not resale. Has little effect for us Wyn owners who bought resale.

part of the worthless dollar resale value is low demand. which is to say that it will affect you when it comes time to sell.

i bought a $1 timeshare on ebay early this year. i have enjoyed it so far and hope to get many years of use from it...but if i have to sell it in an economic environment anything like this one, i'm aware that it will probably cost me $1000 or so to get rid of it (in terms of prepaying annual dues and paying for closing costs in order to find a buyer.)

if you buy cheap and get several decades out of it, it's still much, much cheaper than DVC. but if you need to get out of it, it will be a much different experience than trying to unload a DVC contract...

I wouldn't say Wyndham is better than DVC per say. I like both ownerships for different reasons. Disney for their great theming and Wyndham for their varied locations. We own resale Wyndham points deeded at Wyndham Smoky Mountain resort in Gatlinburg, TN. By having my Wyndham points deeded at that resort I can book their presidential units (the equivalent of a DVC Grand Villa) with my home resort booking window.

I bought the Wyndham points resale very cheaply priced and purposely bought at a resort that was a destination I like to travel to and within a day's drive of home. What's nice about Wyndham for us is you can book online and they have a lot of resort locations along the east coast of the country that interested me - Gatlinburg; Destin and Panama City Florida; San Antonio; National Harbor and Alexandria VA for Washington DC trips; and Bonnet Creek in Orlando (which I adore). They also have a nice new resort on Waikiki Beach called Wyndham Waikiki Beach Walk - I've got that booked for January 2011 when we head back to Oahu. It's a hard trade in RCI, but booking internally with Wyndham points, it was pretty easy to book eight months out.

So far the Wyndham's that I've stayed at have been very nice square footage wise and just as nice as the DVC units I've stayed in. Wyndham's presidential units are quite beautiful. There's a bigger learning curve with Wyndham than DVC because of their nuisance fees, but if you learn how their system works, it's not bad.

Probably the folks that live on the west coast might find Worldmark by Wyndham a better fit because of the abundance of west coast locations.

I bet just about anything it will cost you more that $1000 to sell your DVC. If you buy any of the resorts from Disney direct and try to sell it in a year you are likely to take a huge hit. Now granted some people who bought say more than 5 years ago they might actually make a small profit on their sale. But on the flip side I have between 50-80k dollars at developer costs of Wyndham that I paid a total of maybe $2.5k for so my initial outlay is much much less than my DVC intial costs. That a huge difference in upfront cost that I didn't have to come up with - so cost of capital is also an issue.

We just completed our first stay at Wyndham Ocean Walk in Daytona Beach a few days ago and I was blown away by the resort. I booked a one bedroom deluxe unit and when we arrived, they had a 2 bedroom ocean front unit set aside for us. We've never had that happen with DVC. We also did an evening at Wyndham Bonnet Creek and it is a really nice resort as well. We are currently at Saratoga Springs and after staying at Wyndham's resorts, this 1 bedroom looks more like a half unit.

Don't get me wrong. I still love our DVC but I think you have to give serious thought to what your goal of ownership is.

I am well versed with DVC but totally green with Wyndham. Where do you suggest I shop for Wyndham resale and how do I determine what I should be paying? Any advice is appreciated.

Glad you asked this. We've been considering & been trying to gather as much knowledge on other timeshares in addition to DVC but it just seems so hard to feel certain about what you can & cannot get out of them :confused3 I'm sure this 'fear' of a venture outside of DVC is largely because we've grown so comfortable with how to go about things with our DVC membership, maybe given a bit of time to grow accustomed to the nuances of another timeshare they aren't so difficult to navigate.

I'm guessing with Wyndham Points, if so, can you trade into DVC too through RCI ? We were looking at wyndham points resale in Alexandria, around 110,000 points; I don't think that will do much for us though outside of resort it's deeded to.

where is Dean when you need him! :rotfl2:
On Vacation in HH writing this looking at the Ocean (though it's raining a bit). Brian is well versed in Wyndham, my knowledge there is sketcy. However, essentially all timeshares are better than DVC for non DVC stays. Exactly what's best depends on specifics. For stays across a group of resorts Wyndham is likely the best value for the East and HI, Bluegreen maybe slighly less so but is a MUCH better trading value than wyndham. I'd suggest one look at their situation, where they like to stay and how flexible they are as major components of this issue.

Good questions just wrong place. Go to the site I put earlier it is Wyndham specific and has a ton of info: http://www.tugbbs.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=47

Ask these questions on these forums and you will get very educated wyndham owners. Ebay is one of the best places but Wyndham has a much larger learning curve than DVC. However, right now I think it is the best value in timeshares, very nice resorts and much larger rooms than DVC. However, you really need to do some research and feel comfortable, with the economy there is no rush to buy something now there are PLENTY out there.

Our first Wyndham purchase was through Sellingtimeguys on Ebay - they were great to work with and have 100% positive feedback. We paid less than $500 total (closing, transfer fee, and purchase price) for our first 154,000 points. These were deeded at a Club Wyndham Plus resort at Wyndham Smoky Mountains. I like the Smoky Mountains location because their dues are pretty low and it's a decent drive-to location from Indiana to Tennessee. I booked a one bedroom at Wyndham Waikiki Beachwalk with my first set of points!!! Wyndham has four use years and they are quarterly. Our use year is October with Wyndham. Wyndham is not as easy to change reservations like it is with DVC. You're allowed so many transactions per calendar year with Wyndham based on how many points you have. With DVC I can call them multiple times and book and cancel all I want. With Wyndham I have to plan a little more carefully to save on their nuisance fees.

Take a look at this site. This is the Wyndham owners forum:

Good luck. Take your time and be sure to read the primer on the Wyndham owners forum. You can learn a lot from reading that. Also, here's the online Wyndham directory with all their resorts and point charts:

P.S. I probably wouldn't buy anything deeded at Wyndham Nashville because of the recent flooding.

Another thing, I think of Worldmark as a different club from Club Wyndham Plus. And from what I've heard, Worldmark is more expensive to buy. Maybe some who own with Worldmark can chime in and advise about that club.

Thanks for the great info. I was thinking about another DVC add on, but my kids would rather travel anywhere than Disney and I'm starting grad school so my disposable income will diminish along with my time. So we are also looking at Worldmark. They have some locations nearby that are interesting, especially Yellowstone, where we go every year. But just like disney, it's always better to stay in the park than off site.

I'll have to read TUG and find a great Worldmark resale.

Although possible, it is hard to trade into DVC with Wyndham points. I can always find availability using Hilton Grand Vacationpoints but never successful with Wyndham. Of course, I don't try all that often so this is based on limited experience. Also, with Wyndham, you have to call to check RCI availability.

Thanks for that link. The Primer is very helpful - sort of a Wyndham Points for Dummies, which is exactly what I needed.

The TUG link was helpful too, in a way. The "advice series" has a lot of information (as far as it goes) in a pretty redundant way -- sorta repetitious over and over, again and again, with a lot of duplication...if you get my meaning. If they took out about 1/3 of the words, it would be a much better piece. But it does cover the material in more depth.

Also, the guts of the advice -- the nuts and bolts stuff about how best to utilize your points -- is either not there yet, or it's hidden until you pony up $15...which would be really tacky if that's the answer. I'm not sure which, but I did see portions of the hidden chapters quoted in some of the other threads...:rolleyes1
