DVC newbie with a question about booking

Just wanting to get something straight before we go ahead and book our vacation for next year (our 1st trip as members)! We would like to try and book a 2 BR for next July 9-14. Our 11 month window is coming up next week!! However, we'd really like to try for VWL. Do we book at SSR (our home resort) now, and then at the 7 month window try to change it to VWL? Is that how it works? If we are able to get the VWL at the 7 month window, is the SSR reservation then cancelled and automatically switched? Is there a fee for making a change?

Sorry if these questions are already answered on the FAQ site, but for some reason it isn't coming up for me.

Yes...book your home resort at 11mos and then at 7mos try and switch over. If there is no availibility, you will still have your ressie at your home resort secured and you can always waitlist. If the ressie is available to switch over, they will cancel your home resort ressie and re-book you at the resort (in this case VWL) you are now booking. There is no fee to change over.

disney doesn't have a lot fees within their system - it is when you trade out of their system - conceirge collection, world passport, etc - that you will get some fees.
