Of course DH is thrilled that SSR and OKW are on golf courses however he doesn't want to take his clubs on the plane for 1 round and rental fees seem outrageous - any thoughts?? What do others do??

Jan. 2009 was our first trip as owners at BWV and first to play golf at the World. We played four rounds and took our clubs. Luckily we are allowed 3 bags with United no charge. We played Osprey Ridge (best of what we played) Lake Buena Vista and the 9 hole walking course. We had a great time and paid $50 for the golf card and saved money. If you are only playing one day, maybe rent clubs and I would suggest Osprey Ridge. Hit 'em straight and long.
Aloha

Are you using ME? If so, you check your golf bag at the airport and don't see it again until it arrives in your room. Same for the trip home. It's really nice not to have to drag it around the airports and the resort. Taxi transportation is free to the golf course, and it you play more than once, or at different Disney courses, they will store you clubs and even transport them to another course in time for your next tee time.

We have typically brought our own clubs, but we are now considering different options because of the added costs with the airlines.

Well, you could do what my DH does-let DH play golf more! Bring your clubs just for one round? Yes, I can see where that might be lots of work for little fun. But suppose he was going to golf more, like every day? My DH has tee times every morning we're there. He golfs early in the morning, then we meet for lunch somewhere and do whatever-theme park/pool/shopping together in the afternoon. And on this next trip, I'm going to ride in the cart with him one day-it's supposed to be a great way to see nature. So I vote-let him make bringing his clubs worthwhile-he golfs more!

You say the taxis to golf courses are free? How does that happen? We will be traveling from AKL to The Palms in June and had budgeted for a taxi. Thanks! :thumbsup2

Bring your sticks. Load up your bag with clothes [keep under the wt. limit].
Might save one piece luggage. We used ME last year, a great feature -free.
Taxi transportation works well and club storage really helps. Have a great
time. We'll be at SSR in Aug. with sticks. :rotfl2: :cool1:  Go PSU

Bellman at AKL will give you a voucher to course and when finished, course will give you a voucher back. No cost only a tip to the Cabby if you wish.

We do what Jersey Joe does. Both DH and I golf so we have lots of extra room in our golf travel bags for shoes, undies, swimwear, travel kits, curling iron and other stuff that doesn't wrinkle. Just be careful of the weight. The rest of our stuff we put in a carry-on. After all, if you have a washer and dryer in your villa, you don't really need too much in the way of clothing. Also, the DVC golf membership is definitely worthwhile, even if you only play one round of golf, depending on the time of the year.

One minor detail- Disney includes the cab driver tip. They give you a voucher for the fare and tip. Unless the taxi driver does something special, or you are especially generous, the tip is included.

I was not aware of this. Are you sure and how to verify. I don't want to stiff the Cabby.

Yep, done it several times. Check the voucher. Bell services should tell you when they give to you as well.

Thanks for all the info!! Although one day I'm sure ADH will be a daily Disney golfer - our girls are still little and he enjoys the parks with them. I did do the cart driving on our honeymoon and I had a blast - keeping quiet is my only issue :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:!!! Ahhh - life before kids - or when they are gone - I guess!!:lmao:

We usually drive when hubby is playing golf so we don't have to worry about it. My husband won't play the 9 hole course - but my BIL does. The rate and special 15 dollar club rental make it affordable - he could run out and play and still have time to go to the parks with his family.

If your DH doesn't want to bring his clubs on the plane, there are companies that will ship your clubs to your destination...for a fee.

I have been golfing at least once a year at WDW for almost 20 years, and I always bring my clubs even if it is for just one round. I have considered renting clubs, or shipping my clubs since the airlines began charging baggage fees. But in the end, it usually costs me more to either rent or ship the clubs so I take my own.

As has been noted above if you are using ME, getting your clubs to WDW is much easier. I even ask Bell Services to hold my clubs in their storage room until I am ready to go to the golf course. Then while I am waiting for the taxi the clubs are brought out from the storage room.

The tip on the taxi is covered by the voucher, and is clearly stated on the voucher as well.

The DVC golf membership is a great deal.

I have also enjoyed many rounds of golf at Osprey Ridge, but was disappointed last month to see that the construction of the new Four Seasons resort has begun, and you can see the construction site from some of the holes...most notably the 17th. Even with seeing the construction, I still enjoyed golfing at Osprey Ridge

My husband and I often play the walking course. It is not your usual par 3 executive course. It is a standard size half course. There are two par 5 holes. You must walk, and it is great exercise. Pull carts are available for rental, as well as a smaller bag of golf clubs. We almost always see an alligator as well as wild turkeys, deer, and armadillos, on this course. We wouldn't play it if it was a par 3 executive course. One drawback is that there are no restrooms. There are water fountains. We used to be able to just walk on this course any time. Now, with the closing of Eagle Pines and that fact that it has been substituted as part of the PAP since Pleasure Island has closed, you generally need a tee time. A starter has also been added to this course.

Thanks for that info re Osprey Ridge. That is so interesting, but sad. At least with your photo, DH won't be shocked when he plays there next month.

I almost used these guys to rent clubs last trip, but we had enough room to bring my bag myself. They deliver and pick up your clubs from the hotel lobby, with no need for you to be there. The price is not bad for ok clubs $39 for Nike and $49 for callaway. They also charge per day with no minimum so I could have them deliver in the morning and pick up the same night. Then I can do the same thing later in my trip, rather than paying the whole time. Sure beats $65 at the pro shop.

That dark green plastic fence was soo lame. One of the prettiest holes was made very ugly.
Well, at least it is going to stay in disney ownership. A rumor was going around that 4 Seasons was going to make it private.
