Hi all,
Did you ever get a free room upgrade at DVC resort. ? Like have a reservation for a studio room and they offer a free upgrade to a 1 bedroom.
thanks in advance:cool1:

I've always been of the opinion if you want a larger suite/view etc etc then pay for it :)

Now you get pixie dusted unexpectedly then that's awesome :)

Ok, i shouldn't say...NEVER, but I have never heard of an upgrade unless DVC just messed up and gave away all of the studios...
One time we went to check in at BCV's, and they had no studio for us...even then they did not offer an upgrade. They moved us to a regular room at the beach Club hotel.

I believe it is rare that a DVC reservation is upgraded. I think the only exceptions would be if they over booked or a needed room was taken out of service. Usually if you stay in a higher category room, you get charged higher points.

That's a downgrade. I hope they really took care of you otherwise you should have DEMANDED a 1BR.

The only time it happened to us was when we added one cash night in a studio at the beginning of our trip which was for a week in a one bedroom. They gave us the same one bedroom for the cash night in the studio. But on points it seldom or never happens. And usually it's only for very short stays or maintenance problems.

It happened to us at BCV.We had booked a studio and they upgraded us to a 1BR. That was about 5 years ago. Nothing since.

Nope! I always get what I reserve! It's good thing. I wouldn't expect an upgrade through DVC unless, your accomodations weren't up to par and they had nothing similar available, then I would demand an upgrade and not accept to be downgraded.

Did you guys not see the post on the Resorts board from the guy who reserved a 1 Br. through CRO, but he figures since it is a lock-off they will probably throw in the studio for free?

I am not thinking that's how it works. But whatever! :rotfl:

DVC is just a different beast from the "regular" hotels---the regular hotels can both have slow periods, and can also be overbooked in some categories. With DVC's Member-owned inventory, occupancy more or less exactly matches rooms, year-round. So, there are fewer opportunities (low periods) or necessities (overbooking) to consider upgrading someone.

We got upgraded from a studio to a 1 bedroom at BWV. We were in a studio for 3 nights and then a 1 bedroom for 3 nights to save on points. When we checked in they told us they were putting us in a 1 bedroom for the entire stay and we did not have to move. I did ask if we were going to be charged the extra points and they smiled and said "Nope!" :hippie: This was about 4 years ago, no upgrades since but we now only get a 2 bedroom since we are a family of 5 and our kids are older and I highly doubt we would ever get an upgrade to a Grand Villa. ;)

Everytime I've stayed at OKW on an AP rate (3 times now), I've gotten upgraded for free! This has happened at other resorts quite a few times also.
:yay:

Only stayed on a DVC reservation once (SSR) and got the studio I was booked for. Will never turn down an upgrade though, should DVC offer it. That's what I will miss about AP rate reservations (but not the prices).

My wife and I made a cash reservation at HHI for a studio and were pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a one bedroom. Never have been upgraded on points.

It happens very rarely, usually when there was a problem they want to compensate or when a room or rooms go out of service. Unlike hotels, it's inappropriate to ask for a free upgrade at timeshares, IMO.

It's unlikely they had 1 BR units available either or they would have upgraded them. Hopefully they got some other benefit such as a partial return of points, concierge access, a dining credit or similar. The others I know of at BCV got something that many would consider better but not necessarily what that particular guest would have been happy with. The recent guests from AKV concierge did not fare so well overall, most were send from AKV concierge to SSR with little if any compensation other than the return of the points difference. Maybe some of those directly affected can post exactly what happened to them for clarification.

This is a different situation though. You stayed through CRO when you booked with the AP rate, and that inventory is different from DVC inventory. It's highly unlikely to happen with DVC inventory.

We were upgraded once at HHI from a studio to a 2br. On another visit, the family ahead of us at HHI had the same thing happen to them. Because of the large inventory of 2 br's at HHI, it makes sense that it would happen there occasionally. However, I'd be very surprised at any of the WDW resorts if it happened.
