Yesterday I was in the Writers' Stop, which gives a DVC discount (I didn't even know that!) The man saw my DVC slider on the Magic Band, and the DVC shirt I was wearing, so he asked me. That's when I found out about the discount. However, when he asked for the card and I didn't have it, he said he couldn't give the discount without the card. Tonight I saw on the Theme Park boards that something similar happened to someone else. No card=no discount. I thought that's why we have Magic Bands-so we don't have to carry this stuff around.

Not yet. Maybe someday but I wouldn't bet on it. Disney wants the MB for things that help them make more money off of you. Putting your discounts on it is counter-productive for them.

I remember some of the first marketing on the bands was on how you wouldn't have to carry anything else. They changed that very quickly.

You don't as far as Disney is concerned. You can very easily pay full price without carrying anything else!

Except when something doesn't work. Then they want to see an ID. And a pass etc. etc. No, you cannot just bring your MB.

I once went back to my room to get my card at Kidani because they wouldn't give me the 25 cent discount. I'm not sure why they are so strict about this but I'm not complaining. I just carry the card everywhere.

For discounts, actual cards are needed, and that includes DVC and AP. They can recognize from the bands that you are staying on a DVC reservation but that does not confirm you are a DVC member or that the person wearing the band is the DVC member; likewise, they can recognize from the band that it is attached to an AP but that does not confirm that the person wearing the band is the AP owner. With each, the hard card is what is used to compare the name on the card to an ID that you may also be requested to show. ultimately, the bands could probably become all that is needed but Disney has thus far not spent the money to even accomplish the first step to achieving that, I.e., most of the cash register stations for buying things at stores do not even have the scanners from which one can extract most info on the bands

Because too many people out there want to game the system. For example, borrow a member's magic band to get discounts. So they want to see the card and ID to make sure it is the member.

I have a DVC slider and am not a DVC member. DS and DIL bought on our last trip and I wasn't going to commit until I went home and crunched numbers but I got the slider and tote bag anyway. The sell didn't work, after crunching numbers it didn't make sense for me to buy even though I go twice a year. I didn't put the slider on my MB since I have my AP one on there.

Aulani had DVC discounts on merchandise and yes, you needed to show the card. DH always carries his, I do not.

Disneyland even takes it a step farther. Not only do you need the actual DVC card [which I understand and they don't have MBs yet], you also have to show them your ID so they can confirm it is you listed on the DVC card.

Even with MB I still have to carry ID, my annual pass, my DVC card, an electronic device so I can look up what time my FP+ are at and some cash (just in case there are problems). About the only thing the MB saves carrying is a room key and a piece of paper for a FP. I really wish we still had a piece of paper for the FP.

Some CMs are very strict with the DVC discount. I usually try to avoid carrying my ID/credit cards around because I'm a total space cadet and lose things easily. My DH is way more responsible, so he usually pays for everything (plus, it's much easier for a guy to carry a wallet than for me to lug around my purse). But, I'm the DVC member. When I showed my DVC membership card, the CM wouldn't allow my husband to pay for the merchandise and get the discount because my name was not on his card. I was more shocked at that, than having to show my membership card.

It's the same at WDW, proof of discount (AP Card, DVC Member Card, TiW Card, etc) and Photo ID.

Hmm. I don't remember having to show ID at WDW, but I'm sure you're right. I always carry it so it's no biggie to me. Of course, that means MBs certainly aren't all you need to have on you like Disney indicates.

We always get asked for ID when requesting a discount.

Disney never said that discounts would be automatic.

I guess not, but it would have been nice that what they spent 1,000,000,000+ on could decipher some of the discounts available to us. And yes, I get that some people would then give their MB to someone not a member, blah, blah, but I follow rules so I had hoped others would to.

You're memory could very well be accurate. Sometimes we are asked for ID when getting the discount at WDW and other times we are not. I personally attribute the inconsistency simply to whatever employee you happen to get; some are more thorough and by-the-book than others.

Always asked for photo ID for discount using dvc or ap. Sometimes asked for a photo ID using my TIW card.

What has always worked for me is to have a photograph of my DVC card and my driver's license on my iphone (which I'm carrying into the parks anyway), which I then show while paying. Knock on wood, I've never had a problem.
