Getting ready to purchase but don't know where to turn. Is it better to purchase direct from Disney at Saratoga Springs or is it that much cheaper to purchase from a reseller. What are the pro's and cons.

thanks for all the help

You should think most about where you want to stay for the next 40 to 50 years on your vacation. When you answer that question, buy that resort. If it is SSR, then buy through Disney. If it's the BWV, then buy a resale. Let where you want to stay be your guide, not whether you will save a few dollars. You will be happier in the long run.

thanks for the link and the opinions. so many decisions and I am at the point, I just want to purchase and move on.

If indeed, you just want to purchase and move on, buy from Disney while the $10 deal is still offered. Add-ons are easy through Disney as well, if they are available. We added on the VWL in less than a week, but I understand that there are waiting lists for different use years, so you may not have quite that experience.

The best deal right now is the special offer on SSR. At $79 ($89 less $10 special discount) you are paying less per point over the term of the contract than you are for any of the resales. However, it may be worth it only if you can actually use the longer contract.

However, there is a rumor that the $10 discount will end 10/31 and be replaced with a $5 discount on 11/1.

The 10.00 discount will dissapear on Friday. I just did the sales thing on Sunday and that's what we were told. I have until tomorrow to decide, and I am still not sure which is the better deal, Resale or SSR... what happens after all the other resorts revert back to Disney? Will the resale on SSR still hold?? ANy help with this dilemma is greatly appreciated...FAST!!! Don't wnat to loose this 10.00...is this a good deal, anyway???

Do you want to spend most of your trips at SSR? If so, and you're sure you're into DVC, then you should buy there. Whether or not you buy now and save the $10 or wait and pay more (or maybe less when a resale pops up, which could take awhile) is a personal decision.

If you buy a resale, it is yours for the term of the deed, 38 years (or 50 for SSR)

In 38 years, all of the DVC resorts except SSR revert to Disney. 12 years later, SSR reverts to Disney. Those are the facts today; there is always room to speculate on what may happen.

You won't get a much better deal going through resale, Disney does something called "Right of First Refusal" where they will buy up any contract that sells for too little (and sell those points to people on their wait lists). But you may save a few bucks - especially if you don't want to move in the next two days - and if you don't bother to factor in the extra 12 years with SSR (I'll be in my late 70s and my kids can look after themselves). Most importantly, you can choose from the "sold out" resorts. However, financing is easier through Disney, the process moves faster through Disney. If you want a third hand, buying a resale helps take it off the hands of someone who may be in distressed circumstances, rather than directly lining Disney's pockets.

Although the mantra is "buy where you want to stay" I perfer "buy where you won't be disappointed to stay." We'd have loved to have bought VWL, but Disney had stopped selling and resales were few and expensive. We contacted Disney about BCVs, but they were slow in returning phone calls and we had found a resale before they returned the call. Doing research we decided that the best value was OKW, but had the contract withdrawn by the seller. A BWV contract for the same price was available and we bought that (justifying it with the location and pool slide being more important than large rooms and low dues) - having never been closer to the Epcot resorts than the pastry shop in France. Just got back and were very happy - and yet I'm sure I would have been happy with any of our other choices as well. Each resort offers something different and special.

Good luck in your decision.

If that is your frame of mind, I would contact DVC and commit to Saratoga Springs before the discount is reduced in 2 days. You get the benefit of 12 additional years over the other resorts, and DVC couldn't make the process simpler if they tried. With one phone call (and 10% deposit), you are basically a member. The paperwork will follow in about a week--everything in one package including your temporary membership cards and financing paperwork if you want to finance through DVC.

You sign the papers, return to DVC in the pre-paid FedEx envelope, and you're done.

Financially the SSR purchase is a better deal than any resale if you factor in the extra 12 years of ownership.

A resale would make more sense if two conditions apply:
1. You want to spend the vast majority of your stays at a DVC resort OTHER than SSR, and
2. The extra 12 years of ownership at SSR are meaningless to you.

If either of these conditions apply to your situation, then you should consider a resale. But be aware that the resale process does take additional time and energy. You'll have to find a seller and reach an agreement on price. Then the resale has to pass through DVC's Right Of First Refusal. If the resale you are looking at meets DVC's own needs they can agree to purchase at the price you negotiated, and you are out of luck. The seller could also change his/her mind, leaving you back where you started.

Granted the above is something of a "worst case scenario", but it does accurately illustrate some of the differences between a DVC direct purchase and a resale purchase.

Good luck with your decision.
