DVC Board Kills the Magic

If a thread overly-sweet or if it's sour-grapes, I don't let that stop me, I still enjoy reading and posting to it all: the good, the bad and the ugly. To my knowledge no one here has cornered the market on "Disney magic". Everyone who posts here enjoys the magic in their own way. ::MickeyMo I like to read everyones opinions/comments, even though I may not agree. Most posters have a couple of topics that are their personal favorites. In case you haven't noticed, I have had several of my own-LOL. However, due to some recent changes at DVC I've pretty much had to shelve a couple of them (i.e. AP discount for DVCers and 5 in a 1-BR).

I think they've been reading and that's their plan................... :teeth:

I'm new to this site and I love it! I have learned so much here. We are buying a resale at BCV, thanks to this site. IT'S WONDERFUL!

THANKS TO EVERYONE ON THESE BOARDS!

I just hope we pass ROFR so we can become DVC members.

it's all greeban's fault. him and his polls. he's ruining the neighborhood.

I think greenban should start a poll to see how many people agree with this :teeth:

Whoa, I am out of the loop! Are 5 now 'officially" allowed in a 1-bedroom? We are 4, just curious!

Colleen,

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to post on one of my favorite past-life topics. DVC has not issued any policy in writing, but been quoted as giving this the official OK. And from 1st hand experience, I can tell you this is true. One of our recent 1-br reservations has a comment on it about "No linens and towels provided for the fifth person". That official enough for me!! :goodvibes

Now if we can just get them to have some more affordable member events, and drop the DCL and DC points by about 40%. ;)

Yes and No

I enjoy the up to the minute photos and info Doc shares. I appreciate the effort the mods undertake to keep us on track.

I enjoy the in depth DVC info Dean and others share. I enjoy the friendship formed by those with something in common. I enjoy the polite disagreements over the resorts.

However I truely despise in the worst way the threads by those that are only out to gain something for themselves. Those that want to bend the rules, stretch the limits, never caring that what might benefit them for a short time, might also harm the benefits of the DVC community for a longer time. That part truely makes me sad. :sad2:

Definitely disagree. Everyone has an opinion and though I may not agree with everyone's idea of DVC bliss, I like to be aware of what issues others think are important. The many eloquent posters here on the DIS sometimes engage in a bit of sardonic sarcasm or just plain whimsical license in order to make a point, but that's ok... it makes the points more entertaining IMO.

I love all the information I get here....and the people who give it, whether I agree or not...but I'll admit I have to walk away for a while every so often. I've been around the DIS for a long time....even before joining DVC....and this is about the greatest resource I've found and a wonderful community. That doesn't change the fact that sometimes in order to get excited about things again I need to step back for a while and focus on other areas of my life.

As an easily swayed optimist, I sometimes need to avoid the negative to avoid becoming negative myself. So anyway, I think I agree with what you're saying, at least partially. But I know its my own issue to manage as I need to....we all need to find the balance that works for us.

The wealth of knowledge on the DISboards is amazing, and 'tis better to be in the know than not. ;)

TWDC has done plenty more to kill the magic than these boards could ever do. :(

In any case, newbies should proceed with caution. Message boards are strange creatures...

Also... this may be blasphemy, but it doesn't hurt to take a break from the DIS, as crazy as that may seem. Of course, after being away from the DIS too long... it starts calling... and then you end up reading crazy posts that you originally were able to resist clicking on (has the word "hate" in the title), but for some reason weren't able to stop yourself this time, and of course you started reading it so have to finish the whole darn thing. *sigh*

(Sorry for being weird, that thread made me really tired and now I make no sense.)

OP here.

It doesn't surprise me that so many people love this forum. I do too. In many ways it has increased my enjoyment of WDW. Sometimes I have to take breaks. But I keep coming back. It keeps me close to WDW and things Disney. I have loved Disney since my first trip in 1973 and even before that waiting for it to open since I first heard about WDW in the late 60's. When Walt died I was so worried the plans would be cancelled.

I realize that the PROBLEM is not with the DIS. It's the way all the information feeds my obsessive compulsive nature.

FOR EXAMPLE, last year I just had to reserve an Illuminations cruise. I never would have known about it except for the DIS. I tried morning after morning. One morning I connected on my first try at 7am and just knew I was going to get it and then my cordless phone died!! I freaked out. And the funny thing was I didn't really care that much but had got it in my head I wanted to get that cruise. Then an hour later I saw I post by the lucky person that got it. UGH.

And I print out all my PS's. Before the DIS I thought PS came at the end of a letter. So during our trip all day I'm thinking "Oh we don't want to be late for that PS.!" And I plan the whole day around a PS rather than just be spontaneous.

See, I know that's not the DIS's fault. And I do have professional help BTW.

For me the MAGIC has always been the unexpected wonderful things that happen at WDW. It's never failed to happen. But I have found that I come close to missing those moments because I'm trying to CREATE magic.

And it can't be created or planned.

Because

MAGIC HAPPENS!

(Anyway, I do love you all  and your posts. I would love to attend one of the chats but my life is crazy busy. Maybe sometime when my wife takes the kids out of town to her parents'.)

It is not these boards that have killed the "Magic" for me but the constant down-grading of WDW over the years by Eisner and his pals that has killed it for me. Just give us clean bathrooms with attendants constantly cleaning like there used to be would be nice for starters. Or fish in the fountain at the Poly again. Just turn the place around and go after the higher end customer again. These boards are very informative, not "Magic" killing. :sad2:

I learned very quickly not to get into any debates on these boards, to just keep it light. If it's not about Disney, if its not magical in tone I try not to get involved. I joined these boards to share the magic not to get sidetracked so I try to keep that in mind. I definitely avoid negative or complaint oriented threads. If however I do post on a non Disney oriented thread that I share a positive opinion with the OP, I dont respond if someone decides to get on the thread just to flame a particular point of view, [The homeschoolers thread is one such example where this has happened.] Just keep it positive, remember why you joined the DIS and try not to get overwhelmed by the amount of information and opinions on these boards. When you've found out what you need to know about a specific topic do not over research it. Take your answers and be happy. :teeth: :goodvibes :flower: :sunny: :earsboy:

I agree with the OP.

The way I counteract the feeling is by "dropping off the board" after a couple of weeks of steady reading.. I come back every couple of months, and believe it or not.... The topics don't change :).. I have gotten (and given) some really GREAT info over the years.

That said, for those who "live" here. Thank you! You have been invaluable over the years for information exchange.

As someone said "to each their own". If you are the type of person who burns hot then out, I would suggest taking "sanity breaks" like me :). If you are steady on, then you probably don't need to?

D

I still find that I can get answers to many, many small questions in an instant!
My DH still says, "How do you know about that?"...I've gotten lots of help on the DISboards.

I don't like reading the complaints. I usually don't. Once in a while one gets to me and I can't help myself. But most of the time when I do read derogatory remarks about anything, or anyone, or even myself (I'm from NJ), I just laugh.

I am also a planner and Christmas week we had PSs for every night & CP. DH & I have promised each other that our May trip will be PS-less, until we get there. I agree, it's nice to be a bit more laid back.
