DVC at Contemporary

I just bought Birnbaum's WDW Without Kids-2008. On page 58, where it is describing DVC, it says "At press time, construction was under way to add Vacation Club lodging at the Contemporary Resort." Thought that was sorta interesting, since it is 'the' official guidebook for Disney.

I have heard this a couple times now,

thats a pretty bold statement. I would think someone knew something before they just went off putting that to print

if your guide dates from that time and they still have their presentation material ask them.

or hey just look back to the reports here when it was brand new.

disers were complainting then about how worn everything looked.

It is very, very expensive to make things new look old. DVC did this for BCV and has received nothing but complaints.

WDW use to make up stories on the resorts - which they use to tell us.

BCV was done after Grandmother's cottage so nothing in it was surpose to look brand new.

now some of it might be abuse - but don't think so. It was that way from the beginning. THen I did the tour - one of the guides points out the aging (aging is very expensive).

Are you referring to distressed furniture; if so Yes some of the wood pieces were distressed, but that is different from worn out and beat up.

I stayed at the BCV during their Grand Opening. Never did anyone, guides, DVC upper management or BCV management refer to it as Grandmother's Cottage in fact I think that particular description would be a turn off to some.

However within a year we went back and the distressed furniture then had graffitti on it, very badly worn and stained sofas and chairs, etc. which was not due to theme but entirely due to excessive wear and tear. The GM is a friend and he said they were extremely disappointed as to how poorly the furnishings had held up.

hey when you use distressed furniture - you have got to expect this type of thing. the furniture looks old - so what if it damaged more.

DVC did NOT think this through - my opinion.

when I went through the tour, the guide was quick to point out the distressed areas and say it was planned that way. So no one would complaint about old the furniture looked.

Part of the problems with BCV is either the members who brought here didn't understand the plan or were not told by their guides.

It received complaints in that first year. much, much too soon for the wear and tear you are refering to - to have happened.

Now if if the furniture has gone down that far - then yes they might have a problem. but kept in mind when you age furniture each and every piece will be a little different.

what you are calling in bad shape - might actually be what was done to it originally.

Besides my best argument is that Disney hasn't as of yet replaced it. If it was as worn out as you and others say. Disney would have replaced as well as sue the manufacture for giving them defective furniture. they have not done either.

This is DVC most popular resort. Don't you think they want it to look excellent.

they should have done what they did for OKW - tell the story for the first few years. I think that would have caused far less complaints.

Now I would not be surprise if this latest rehab is to replace the furniture - but since furniture generally has a lifetime of what 10 years - don't count on it.

I haven't been recently - maybe a returned trip is needed. but when I was there that first month - the furniture was definitely worn - it has been slammed by a hammer. but since the paint (or whatever it was) was not hurt - it done that way intentional.

next visit look at the paint - if it is still on - then guess what - it is what Disney wanted.

in my experience you can't ban something with hammer or other things and expect the paint to be still on. okay this may not be paint - but some stain - that may not act like paint.

but hey do it - since the furniture is so bad off and no one could tell anyway.

I also don't think DVC planned the furniture at VWL very well either. I think the idea was that it was supposed to look mis-matched, like a cabin would be. But honestly, that couch drives me crazy. It is so ugly and the carpeting just makes it look that much uglier. And cheap. I stayed at SSR last week and enjoyed the furniture/decor so much!

Am I the only one who hates the furniture (couch) and rug at VWL??? sorry Groupies.

Those pics show that the bulding will be as tall as those tower cranes... I think it might be mixed use, for both resort guests and DVC, similar to how the proposed Hawaii resort will be...

fyi, I had DH (some construction experience) take a peek @ the pics posted above; he believes the cranes are "jack cranes". My translation from his lol, the cranes start out @ a certain height & can be raised once the lower building floors are finished. i.e. the building may very well be taller than the current height of the cranes.

I am talking handles falling off, drawers won't open, guests that have carved and taken ink pens and written on the furniture, lots of stains on the carpet, sofa and chair and the bench seat at the dining area. Bench seat get coming apart.

My friends that work at BCV said that it was very hard to keep in the orginial condition due to the poor quality of the furniture.

I do think some CMs when guests complained about how quickly they rooms looked worn, simply said, "Oh it's suppose to look like that".

I stayed there on opening day and saw it when it was fresh and new and stayed again a year later and the place looked like it had aged 5 years.

HHI had the same problem with their carpet. It simply did not hold up well.

boy that is really, really bad.

write to DVC and disney and tell them.

they have taken suppliers to court before for defective products. BWV redo is an example.

DVC to my knowledge does not buy cheap stuff at any of their resorts. So they probably paid top price of this stuff.

tell them you feel that BCV got cheated. and you want a manager to look at it and okay new furniture.

just because the CM at the resort agreed with you doesn't mean that DVC management knows about it.

OKW is much, much older and has the problems with guests - I think all the DVC resorts do - but none of the drawers falling apart.

stains on the carperts will happen at any place where children (or me) is allowed to stay. when I drop something I call housekeeping and have them clean it immediately (if they can). don't leave it. some people think they will charged to have the stain cleaned then and don't call anyone.

Our room this last June had absolutely none of these issues at all. Then again I have said before they apparently know when we are coming and completely redo a room for us.

Last summer BVC got a new manager and he has been very active in trying to upgrade the rooms; hence the new sofa beds, mattresses, linens and replacement of any damaged furniture.

Glad to hear that Sammie! After our first stay I thought they made some wrong choices in the furniture/fabric. The dining table was a thin veneer that was easily chiped and water stained. Also a fabric covered bench cushions that are not removable. What were they thinking??? Kids will be eating here!

Just a little more info to add to the CR DVC rumor! I just got off the phone with CRO to book a Nov. '08 trip to the Contemporary. The CM told me that there would be some construction going on during my visit as a new DVC tower was being built at the Contemporary!
