DVC AP increase in Aug?....

Boy, do I feel dense this morning! You mean when i renew my DVC AP online it does not use the purchase date as the start date of the AP, but only starts after you exchange the voucher for your AP at the park?

If you are renewing, the start date is the expiration date of the old pass.

No.

If you RENEW your AP, the new AP date starts the day the old AL expired, no matter how you renew. If you renew by phone or online, you get a voucher (real or virtual) that must be exchange for a live AP. No matter when you exchange that voucher, the new AP will be dated according to when the old AP expires/expired.

What is confusing in this thread is that people are talking about 2 different things. Some are talking about taking advantage of the renewal discount. This renewal (whether done in person to get a live AP or remotely to get a voucher/confirmation number) can only be done 30 days on either side of the existing AP expiration date. If you renew remotely, no matter when you activate the renewal, it will be dated according to the AP that was renewed.

Other people are talking about buying new AP vouchers ahead of time and saving them. This is done for a couple of reasons - some do it to spread out their expenditures over time. But the reason more relevant to this thread is that some buy new AP vouchers (not renewals) to lock in the current price, knowing that a price increase will likely come in August. These vouchers for new APs can be used at any time and the AP obtained with them is not backdated at all - its use year starts the day the voucher is redeemed.

For many, renewal isn't as good a deal given the way trips can be spaced out. By pre-purchasing vouchers at the current price, it's a way to shave a little bit of cost off an AP that will be activated AFTER the rate increase.

Not exactly correct. I DO have renewal (not new) vouchers that I purchased in previous years which I will use in the next couple of years. The 30 day before and 30 day after renewal rule doesn't really exist in the real world. I have always renewed our DVC APs with renewal vouchers purchased WAY before that 30 day mark.

Interesting.. I also always thought the renewal date started at the end of your old pass. Or am I also confused as to what you are saying??

Anyway, it's not worth it to me. I can't see holding thousands of dollars worth of passes for several years in order to save $20. But, others may disagree..

On a side note, we bought the Premier Pass this year. I really hope DVC will get a discount on these passes in the future..

I'm only going by the stated rules on the 30 day thing. I knew some were able to renew earlier or later than that, but I don't know how big an exception it is or isn't.

As for the renewal vouchers themselves, they can still only be used on the renewal of a pass, not a new pass, correct?

Correct. The point is that it isn't only new passes that you can buy vouchers for in advance. Renewal vouchers are also available in advance. Anyone could do this at any time so I'd say there really was no rule at all for 30 days before or after.

And with current % paid on CDs, the return on buying vouchers for Disney in advance is probably much better than you can find for your $ in the bank! We KNOW Disney will increase prices... :rotfl:

Yes, you're confused. The renewal date does start at the end of your old pass. But you can buy as many renewal vouchers in advance as you'd like. Or, at least you could. If they aren't sending out the green voucher cards anymore, not sure how that works buying them way in advance.

I think I understand now, but still a bit confused..
If the renewals are predicated on your current AP, wouldn't they all become active at once? How do you defer the activation of the subsequent renewals?

Ok for the last few years I have been buying the AP renewal in July/Aug to beat the price increase , my AP exprires in late Oct but I am usually in the middle of a trip then so just go and get new pass. this past year when you renewed you got 3 extra months so now my pass expires in Jan 11. can I still renew this summer? I usually don't go back until March so could I just get the pass then with the renewal voucher(also on a side note Discover card has been running 5X cash back on theme park passes so I get that too)

I was able to buy as many renewal vouchers as I wanted online. They are just green cards that can be applied to any DVC basic A/P at any time in the future. They only become "active" when I turn one in to renew an A/P.

Sure! You can get the renewal before the anticipated price increase in August. Then turn in the voucher (or the number they give you if that is how they do it now) next March and you'll get your renewed AP. You may want to think about getting a new one though instead. You could go later March 2011 and earlier March 2012 on the same AP if you timed it right. But if you renew, it will run Jan 11-Jan 2012.

Thank you for answering. We might have to rethink this year. We used to just get the new AP and try to get 3 trips but last few years the renewal rate made it good deal to just renew.(we added on and started to stay 3 weeks at a time in March and Oct and it got to difficult to juggle the dates). Maybe go in Jan and cut out March.

Got it. Although I have done AP renewals many times in the past, I always thought they were tied specifically to my current AP.
