I am looking to get into the whole DVC thing. I read the post about resale and think that is the way to go. I have a few questions though.

1. Tickets aren't included. Do you get a discount on tickets?
2. Does the timeshare ever expire? If so, how do you know when that is?
3. What is a good price for points for AKL?
4. How many points does one need to visit once or twice a year?
5. I read that Disney will approve darn near anybody, what about going through
a third party for resale?

I think that is all for now!! Thanks for ANY and ALL help you guys can provide!!

1. Currently DVC members get discounts on AP and PAP, but no MYW tickets.
2. Each resort does have an expiration date. Most of the older ones are 1/31/42 with the newer ones a bit longer.
3. Check out the ROFR thread to see what people have paid so far. Prices seem to be going up after a year or so of lower prices.
4. Check the points charts at the top of the page to see what is required for each time of the year in each size villa. They can change a bit, but the total number of points for the resort cannot change unless they add more villas. But they can distribute the points among the villa categories and time of year as long as the total number stays the same.
5. A lot of members on the DIS will advise against financing your DVC purchase. Especially for a long period of time. There was just a post the other day from a member who had owned for five years, had five more years to pay on the contract and needed to get rid of it because of financial issues. They couldn't afford to sell it because the price they could get was less than they needed to pay it off without adding a few thousand dollars on top. But there are some companies that will finance a resale purchase. Check with the reseller to see what they say.

DVC isn't cheap and it can be an expensive way to visit WDW. You still have to pay park admission, dining and transportation.

Just a word about discounts...when you buy DVC, you're buying the right to stay in DVC resort accommodations, subject to availability. Everything else is subject to change. Discounts don't 'come with' your membership, the paperwork you'll receive from DVC if you buy will state plainly that discounts and perks aren't part of your membership.

We get discounts when other divisions of the Disney company and various 3rd-parties offer them. Discounts and perks come and go.

As for financing....make sure you do the math and figure out what you're really paying when you finance. The only real reason to buy DVC is to potentially save money on DVC resort accommodations, and when you finance, make sure the finance charges aren't so high that you're no longer saving money by owning DVC. A lot of people get caught by thinking, 'wow, it's only $x dollars a month, I can afford that!'.....and not running the numbers and seeing that they're paying WAY more for their membership than those who don't finance.

There is another real reason to buy - and that is to spend MORE money than you would if you didn't own, but to be able to stay on property and have a kitchen, or a washer dryer, or another bedroom for the kids, or access to the monorail or Epcot's back door from your hotel, or.....

A lot of DVC members do not save a penny, but they feel like they get more value for the money they do spend. But that value equation changes significantly when you finance, regardless of if you get value from a washer dryer.

We save a penny with DVC but spend a buck with Disney. :goodvibes

Please spend a few months educating yourself so you can make the best decision possible.

We stay pretty exclusively in studios (I don't like to cook and do laundry on vacation). 160 points is plenty for 2 weeks a year - one in the fall and one in late spring.
