Anyone own Marriott as well? Can you tell me the good and the bad? We are looking for something for our non-Disney travel and I know I definitely don't want to trade my pts to RCI.

Marriott has converted to a points based system. If you purchase directly from them you must buy points. I think the min is 1000 points and they cost around $11/ point. You can still purchase a deeded week resale. Those purchasing after June 2012 can not convert to points. If you like the weeks bases system resale has vey good choices especially platinum weeks. I have not yet converted and have had success trading into other Marriotts, as there is a marriott preference in interval. You can also deposit your week in interval and go outside of Marriott.

we own both and love both. If you can pick out a top Marriott as a good main option (resale) then join II and trade aggressively, I don't think Marriott is a good option for what you are thinking assuming you'll use it a week at a time. I would not buy the new trust points program now until there is a better resale market and the prices come down. If the week at a time and one other main location isn't best for you, another points minisystem like Bluegreen, Wyndham, Worldmark or even a RCI points resort might be best for you. I'd say come up with a list of locations you'd like to actually visit over the next 5-10 years then see who has what in the areas.

We own both. I use our 2 fixed week Marriotts (acquired for less than $1K each) exclusively to lock off and trade through II, mostly for Hawaii and Mexico, though we occasionally have used them for Newport Coast Villas and Palm Springs properties as well. We've been very happy with how well this has worked for us, but I also recognize I'm in the minority as far as having such good success with this strategy.

DVC is only for onsite stays for us. I don't see it as a good value to use for anything else. I like my BCV points to ensure I can stay at BCV when I want to be there. When I want to go somewhere else, especially Hawaii or Mexico, my Marriott traders give me great resorts for about $600 per week total.

i don't have a marriott but i have a fixed week timeshare that i use in II to trade for marriotts (usually in shoulder season).

if you don't mind being limited to 7 night vacations, i think it's a great option to look into. you might want to join TUG to learn more about locking off a 2BR and trading both the 1BR and studio components for 2 weeks of vacation elsewhere...

if you are not limited to the school calendar, there are some great trade options available.

I own both. DVC's VWL and Marriott's Aruba Ocean Club two bedroom oceanfront floating week. If someone told me I absolutely had to sell one, the Marriott would be gone. I love my DVC and consider it the Cadillac of timeshares and the most flexible. Hope that helps.

We own DVC, plus a couple of floating platinum weeks at Marriott Mountainside (owned long before they converted to points). We've been to the points presentations twice now, and I wasn't impressed with their system compared to DVC.

But since we own ski weeks and only use it there, its been just :cloud9:. The service is great, the rooms are kept up well and refurbished often and the maintenance fees have been comparable to DVC, which I think is pretty reasonable. (We have stayed at several other Marriott Vacation Club resorts, just on cash since we don't trade out our weeks, they're much too valuable and it would always be a trade down. The quality of the resorts have been consistently high.)

As others have said, buying a week or two resale, preferably one with lower MFs and then trading into another Marriott resort you like could be great if you're savvy enough. If I had more vacation time I'd consider picking up another week resale.

I own Marriott, Starwood and DVC.

I use DVC for Disney, Marriott for off site orlando or other Marriotts and I use starwood for WKORV Maui reservations, works great for me.

I bought Marriott Every Other Year ownership in a 3 bedroom and lock it off, it is nice to go EOY so you can have more than one Timeshare system without having too many to use.
